I think you are replying to someone I have blocked but this is a fair question and a tough one.
South Korea is the poster child of decades of US over-reaching. I will assume the original mission there was justified. I see no reason at all we should have stayed for another 65 years, with US troops at risk as a tripwire. South Korea is a rich, industrialized country that routinely takes advantage of us in trade matters. They are perfectly capable of providing for their own defense. They want it both ways though. They don't want to do anything that might disrupt their cozy lives, but they are ok with exposing us to a nuclear attack.
I am having trouble seeing the MAGA in that.
There are not two sides to this issue, there are quite a few more than two.
There are those who want to maintain south korea as colony held up buy the United States, and there are those who want to just pull the plug and let them become a united colony under china, and then there are those who are willing to side with south korea if they want to bear the primary burden but need more support. As with all lib programs, we promote learned dependence at home and abroad. The age-old hand-out versus hand-up dilemma.
In addition, the same thing goes on in our relationship with the UN. Let us not forget that the Korean War was originally a UN action not just an American action. But as with every other UN activity, eventually all the other countries pull out and we continue to fund them to criticize us.
My view on this changes with some of the facts on the ground. Six months ago, I was willing to pull the plug on them outright. The South Koreans elected a lib government and the new prime minister touted how he had relatives with North Korea so his approach was going to be kumbaya. Then he announced that the Americans could not put THAD missiles in South Korea and that he wanted American joint training exercises to be curtailed and gave the finger to the Americans. WTF? Then, after rocket man starts acting up, he suddenly starts begging the Americans for the THAAD missiles to be installed and for joint exercises. WTF ON STEROIDS. They have been at this for 65 years and are still thinking about the basics.
So, I am not in the camp of supporting them as in the past nor am I in the camp of dumping them outright. It is a little bit MAGA in the sense that it is somewhat like trumps policy toward NATO They are on probation in my mind. I would have dumped them outright six months ago. Flat out tell them - "you are on your own." So, like NATO I willing go forward with them as long as everyone understands they are on probation and all alliances are being reviewed. And if that is not MAGA, that is fine too. I am not a lib getting signals from the Mothership.
- I do think that much of the focus on tidying up foreign policy and military policy should be focused on Japan. If we are not going to restrain North Korea either because we cant or we no longer have that as a goal, then we should let Japan out from under the treaties limiting their military offensive capabilities. They should have the right to protect themselves, including going on the offense. Because the Koreans, the Chinese, and the Japanese have- let's just call it historical baggage" that is the last thing they want. Good. Quit dicking around in korea then.
So, I have a view that is quite well formed but surprisingly fluid the minute I see any more bad behavior whatsoever from either North or South Korea or China. Helping hand but no learned dependence.
Speaking of Nato. Back in the Libya war, the Brits wanted to take Libya to protect the oil contracts between BP and the Libyan government. So they went to Obama and said that they alone did not have the air power to take Libya. JESUS H. See what I am sayin about learned dependence. The British and the French together did not have the air power to take out the Libyan military sites.
They are as worthless as tits on a nun. It was an illegal war anyway but compounded by the fact that they suckered the US President into doing their dirty work for them because they could not get it up themselves.
Alright enough of that.
