Zen, Yoga, Meditation and Trading

Quote from marketsurfer:

No, actually quite the opposite. I believe in strengthening the self in a softened ayn rand /nietzschian type philosophy...

OK, so here there is also the path of philosophy. :D

Quote from marketsurfer:

... I did the eastern route and its empty. surf
Do you mind elaborating on your experience - what you did, etc...- and what made you to come to the conclusion that it is empty?

Quote from Shanb:

What do you consider the self?

In Yoga and other eastern practices the self is distinct from the ego. The ego is usually considered the self in the west, so I can see where there is some confusion. The ego is seen as a mental construct that seeks to perpetuate its own existence. The ego is a blinder in a sense because it distorts your perception of events in order to strengthen its own existence.

Yoga is a practice that allows you to transcend the bounds of ego and experience reality for what is. Being empty or present is nothing more then being in tune with what is actually going on around you. That is true consciousness!

How does yoga allow to transcend the bounds of ego?
can you give some concrete examples? any links appreciated.

I can tell you this

when I was young we had a band, and we were stoned all the time, but it got to where we were playing 6 nights a week till 3 am and midnight on Sunday and I started doing that cocaine before and during the gig all night just to stay inspired

finally we got a really good contract in May for a gig only four nights a week starting in SEP. So we decided to take the summer off. The band had a house where we all lived, but all the other members had girlfriends who they lived with, I was the only one with no girlfriend, so I got the whole house all to myself for the summer. I knew I needed to clean out and I don't do anything in a small way.

I woke up every morning about 6 am no alarm clock and did my Hatha Yoga (Taking care of the body) and then did breathing excercises and finally just sat still and tried to meditate for an hour in the lotus position.

I spent the day writing music, and I had a whole basement full of top quality instruments and recording equipment.

Usually took a long walk every afternoon to the spiritual book store or grocery store

I still smoked pot, but only in the evening when I was reading my spiritual books

and then repeated the whole yoga routine and meditation about 10 o clock at night and dropped off

after just 3 months of this routine I was higher than a kite.

no matter who I met I could read them immediately

I very rarely gave advice, but I could say just one sentence and a whole glow would come over them and put them at rest from the trouble they were in

eventually I too had a girlfriend and the whole thing came apart

it is very easy, yet almost no one can do it

now I am old, no wife, no kids, no job. I should meditate every morning and night. I know it would change my life. Nothing will change your life more for the better than meditating. And there really is no technique that you have to study. It's just the sitting there still for a period of time that does all the good. It's so easy, yet almost no one can do it.

Now I can sit for about 3 minutes before I want to turn the tv on and watch the game. If I have many more trading weeks like this last one, I won't have enough money for Direct TV and I will be forced to meditate again.

wow!!!!!
May I ask : how long have you been trading?
I've told the story many times, am tired of repeating it

started as a stock broker, didn't like that, got a series 3 and focused mostly on ags but also cattle and swiss francs

kept an account going for 13 years and then blew up on some short wheat

had to work a real job (my own business) for 9 years

then this and that and eventually started trading ES exclusively and hit it big.

took some time off

now I am just a small forex trader, trading for fun and profit

the funny thing is, after I got it all set up so I don't have to trade for a living, I am making enough in forex to pay my meager bills each month, a lot of it has to do with not needing it

it was rough back then when you got a $90 profit in the first minute and thought, "I better take it, that will pay the electricity for the month."

Folks, you are living in such Great country. Why do you ever feel the need to get high? Can you imagine how a clean body be ecstatic without any pot?

I think his route cause is his wrong choice of woman.
This wrong choice certainly coming from psychological issues, that
certainly are still there.

Quote from smallStops:

very instructive trader/broker life experience.
Why do you need trading to pay your bills as you made it big?
I don't, it's just now that I am trading again, it is paying the bills

I have some income from some bonds

it is just going into the money market

But like I said, it was a very bad week in forex, as a matter of fact, extremely bad, so I may need that bond income again pretty soon if this keeps up.

but since you seem interested in meditation and all things spiritual, there is something they call Bhatki Yoga. That is where I think I am at. It is finding your peace in the job you are doing. So for me, trading is my spiritual experience.

People talk about what to do to get peaceful with trading. My approach is to trade. It is a very good way to quickly find your peace. I could probably go to India and find some yogi and give him 25k and tell him, "Here, use your powers on this money for the good of mankind." And in about a year he would be dealing drugs in some whorehouse.

Trading confronts you with everything that is wrong with you. Don't matter if it is laziness, or greed, or fear, it will find you out.

But a good trader should do one without neglecting the other. Trading is good for you, but don't neglect just sitting still for a while.

easy to give advice
hard to follow it
