As noted... The hostages include citizens of other nations including Mexico, Germany and other countries. I will note that many of the hostages do not hold Israeli (dual) citizenship.

Of course, the hostages lead to a complicated situation. Do you go in and just kill the Hamas members and don't bargain for hostage exchange (as per the typical Israeli government policy) which will likely lead to their deaths.

The shooting of people running away across a field at the music festival was simply murder and the Hamas terrorists used them for target practice.

Hamas, terrorists but you are fooling yourself thinking they don't see themselves as a legitimate army, were likely extracting revenge to play well with their crowd. They don't care if you don't see the festival goers as soldiers, they do and most of the festival crowd do in the cold light.

They could have grabbed even more hostages with the resources they used in this attack. It may be simply to commit their population to a do-or-die mentality.

Let's not play devil's advocate for terrorists either. Terrorists see targets of opportunity, nothing else. Sadly this attack just gave Israel greenlight to do in Gaza what the US did to Afg. The least charitable excuse one could use is that of making a music festival next to Gaza, arguably rubbing in the occupation but that's not deserving of death. Hamas broadcasting atrocities around the world will not be well received by Palestenian-sympathetic libs. either.
