Systeem will never be perfect so I am in favor of working to keep improving it but definitely works well for the sheer volume it processes.
If the article thesis is this:
The more likely explanation for these results is that Democratic ballot harvesting operations have reached such heights of sophistication that they can parachute into decisive battlegrounds and scare up enough votes among ignorant and unmotivated citizens to overcome the natural enthusiasm of informed and self-motivated voters.
well the author is saying a party uses an issue to scare voters to come out and vote...like trump did with immigration and biden did with maga threats......is this really the point of the article because this is what is done in every election basically. GOP scares voters that dems are coming for your guns and dems scare voters that GOP is racist and wants to eliminate all immigrants.
Can we help it if we have ignorant voters? Did the Dems do anything the Gop doesnt do with guns and critical race theory in schools and such...
We cannot complain if politicians use issues to scare ignorant voters to vote because we cannot force ignorant voters to ignore bullshit.
can you really stop people from going door to door to try and get people to vote? you can maybe pass an ordinance against solicitation but not gonna win that battle as people have the right to go out and look for business or go door to door to raise funds or discuss issues.
if it is illegal to pay people to fill out a card then .....there is already a law on the books methinks.

"ballot harvesting" is just spooky right wing buzz terms for "get the most people to vote who can't for x reasons". Fascists who hate democracy will of course hate it.
No, you don't have to stop people going door to door to get out the vote. But you CAN stop people turning in groups of other people's ballots. There's no secure control of the ballot from someone who collects them in boxes, puts them in a van and then stuffs the ballots into the election center.
If you want to push mail-in votes, fine. I'm not sold on those because there's no real way to certify them that people actually accept other than notarization. But fine.
But don't allow for people picking up ballots en masse from many, many voters and then taking custody chain of them.
For the second or third time, we're not talking about fraud here. Ballot harvesting is legal in many states. Which also explains why it was not taken to court.
That is absolutely not what it is about. People who can't vote for x reasons, but want to vote just vote by mail. What's going to happen is that Republicans are going to start doing it (they're talking about it in these states) and then its going to get ugly. And the first time a republican candidate wins because of it, the democrats are going to start to call it out. Its only because the democrats have a massively better ballot harvesting organization right now.
Than can certainly be fixed with a 3rd party official or some other process to proof the chain of custody like done in criminal evidence procedures. I also am not in favor of someone going out and collecting all the ballots from people in a neighborhood.
However the get out the vote movement works well for both sides so they just need to fix the final step.
Well there is your ambiguity. Creating conditions in which registration and actual voting is difficult because some people do not have the means or time to vote or register does not mean they “don’t want to vote.” But people who would vote otherwise doesn’t mean they “don’t want to vote.”
But again coercion is illegal too. So obviously I’m against that as well.
Here’s what I will say, your instincts are right. You can identify illegal behavior related to voting. But you seem to not know where the line is between what you call “harvesting” and actual crime.
Again, this is more about republicans having a traditionally shitty ground operation and turn out the vote strategy. The right wing commentators you seem to be reading, thinking they “articles”, blur the line but their agenda is stop democrats from having effective ground operations rather than improving their ground operations.
It is also important to note a lot of the democrats ground operations are in response to republican making it difficult to vote for marginalized groups. It’s a push and pull.
