Trump Doubles Down On Wall

In his speech last night, Trump appeared to rule out any compromises or backsliding on his signature issue, the border wall. He said he was prepared for a government shutdown if that is what is needed to force congress to fund it.

Didn't he say Mexico would fund it?

No,for a few seconds due to the thought of Dems retaking both Houses of Congress in 2018 I hoped a Trump promise would come through.Than I quickly came to my senses. You idiots have been believing in Trump promises for nearly 2 years and counting.

Speaking for one of these so-called idiots you claim have been believing his promises for two years, you are being hyperbolic (again, a tendency of yours).

Many of us who voted for Trump were not happy about having to do it, but we had hoped he would keep his word on promises vs. the cow we knew was a liar from the start. And it seems we are now disappointed for the breaking of promises.

I remember feeling the exact same way after I voted for Obama the first time around, and saw what I got.

Trump's failures have largely been things out of his control, eg courts taking over immigration policy. He wanted good relations with congress and thus let them handle obamacare repeal. He basically handed them the ball and said, run for a TD and be the hero. Instead they fumbled, then blamed Trump for expecting anything out of them in the first place. Afghanistan policy is clearly a compromise. When it fails, he will be in a stronger position to insist on a pullout.

People are upset that Trump might trade DACA for wall funding. The problem is that Trump was always wobbly on DACA. It was not part of his core immigration policy. He wouldn't mind keeping some version of it. Otherwise, he'll have to deal with Ivanka's tears again.

Trump can't shut the government down. Only Congress can do that. I guess the Donald doesn't know his veto would be overridden by Congress.

You're making an assumption that would be the case. There are plenty in the House that would be just fine with a shut down.

The Wall? Oh, didn't you hear ? Trump will make Mexico pay for the Wall.

Policy? Haven't you noticed, Trump has no policy other than he will do anything, or say anything, that will get people to like him at the moment. The next day his "policy" may be different depending on who he is trying to get to admire him on that day. He will threaten anyone that doesn't like him, and call them a "very bad person." He's been the plaintiff or defendant in over 4000 law suits. How is that possible in one lifetime? That's about one suit a week since he was age 20. Trump is a very bad person. Bigly! He's insane!

I doubt your assumption will prove correct. But I imagine there are plenty of democrats that hope you are right.

I agree.I think the freedom caucus and a few in the Senate like Cruz and Lee might be willing to shut the gov down but there are more than enough Republicans that will go along with all of the democrats for a clean spending bill to override Trumps veto.I hope I'm wrong though as I would love a long shut down over a wall.

Pelosi and Chuck have made their stand.Lets see who will blink.

“If we have to close down our government, we’re building that wall,” Trump said during a Tuesday rally in Phoenix, Arizona, suggesting that he would allow a shutdown come October if a U.S.-Mexico wall was not funded.

Democratic leaders responded swiftly Wednesday morning making it clear that the inclusion of wall funding in a bill to keep the government open would be enough for them to vote no.

“If the President pursues this path, against the wishes of both Republicans and Democrats, as well as the majority of the American people, he will be heading towards a government shutdown which nobody will like and which won’t accomplish anything,” Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) said in a statement.

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) also issued a statement, saying Democrats would “stand fast against the immoral, ineffective border wall and the rest of Republicans’ unacceptable poison pill riders.”

“Make no mistake,” Pelosi added, “the President said he will purposefully hurt American communities to force American taxpayers to fund an immoral, ineffective and expensive border wall.”
