Total US Debt Rises Over $18 Trillion; Up 70% Under Barack Obama

I would agree that turning a 1.2T deficit to a 441B one is good work. However, when your spending programs are pushing out higher spending to the outset of a 10 year mark like some entitlement programs, OR if your projections are off then it's really irrelevant in the end. Additionally, income is a big part of that, and if you've got a recovery going on and tax receipts are rising, you get the benefit of that.

Did Obama actually cut spending? Or was he President during an increase in tax receipts that actually cut the deficit for him? Do you know? I do.

Obama did cut spending by ending the Iraq war and pulling some troops from Afghanistan. He also increased tax receipts by ending some of the Bush tax cuts and having increased tax receipts from turning Bush's 800,000 a month job loss economy to the Obama multi year job growth economy. He also didn't massively increase defense spending like Bush and Reagan did and Trump wants to do.

Obama added 70 percent to the deficit (the national debt) about 8 trillion in 8 years.
He did not cut spending. He may have changed spending buthHe spent his ass off.

When you come into office with the government spending 1.2 trillion dollars more than it takes in a lot of debt will accumulate on your watch. Most of the debt under Obama is not from legislation he passed, its from paying for Bushs 2 wars,Bushs tax cuts,Bushs unfunded medicare drug program and fixing Bush's 800,000 a month job loss economy.

Better than the guys you voted for.And Bush and Reagan's debt is from their polices, not 1.2 trillion dollar deficits, unfunded wars, unfunded tax cuts, unfunded medicare expansion etc that their predecessors left them.

"Bush increased the debt 101 percent from where it started on September 30, 2001, at $5.8 trillion."

"Ronald Reagan: Added $1.86 trillion, a 186 percent increase from the $998 billion debt at the end of Carter's last budget, FY 1981."

The issues surrounding the national debt and deficit are much more complex than can be covered in this thread. There is plenty of blame to go around when it comes to administrations. Whether it is Bush, Obama or others -- I can point to both positive & negative actions in their administrations that impacted the deficit and national debt.

It's simple. There were very little spending cuts for the time of the chart (up until 2014) and a lot more revenue. This is what drove the the deficit drop.

Your job growth bullshit was disproven with the part-time job chart previously posted. Yes, overall job growth occurred. But no, it wasn't quality jobs and full time positions actually declined.

Agree wholeheartedly. The fun was to point out the blatant one sided views that folks like Tony have. And he didn't disappoint, rushing in with two hands and both feet to show that his President did great things, while other Presidents failed miserably.

Its better leave office with years of positive job growth(Obama) than it is to leave office losing 800,000 jobs a month (Bush)

Its better to come into office with a 1.2 trillion deficit and leave with a 441 billion dollar deficit(Obama) than it is to come into office with a 128 billion dollar budget surplus and leave with a 1.2 trillion dollar deficit (Bush)

Obama and Clinton left office with the budget in much better shape than it was when they came into office.Reagan,Bush and Bush 2 all left office with the budget in far worse shape than it was when they came into office.

Years of positive job growth in bartenders, waitresses and other part-time jobs while losing full time jobs? That's not anywhere near as impressive as you continue to maintain.

It is indeed better. I am not debating whether this is better, but whether you can attribute it so blindly to Obama, as you are doing.

Reagan destroyed the Soviet Union by out spending them. I know you want to ignore things like world geopolitics in your quest to raise Obama to God-like status, but you really need to consider other factors (which, of course, is very inconvenient). The fact is that the debt increased during Obama by the highest percentage on record. That's an ouch. True, revenues also increased lowering the deficit, but the country wasn't better off, as it is the debt that they owe. Whether this is Obama's fault or not is irrelevant. It happened under him, just as previously mentioned spending problems happened under Bush, Reagan, etc.

Its far better than leaving office losing 800,000 jobs a month, like Bush did.
