History by googling some snippet.. I lived in the Irish/UK relm all this time period. It was not stuff people in the States had much to any attention on, big deal in the UK.

Everyone understood when the lease expired the clock was ticking. Agreements become nothing once they can't be enforced.

The declaration was forced into being because the lease was running out.....rather than just give back part of the territories and separate out parts of Hong Kong area, Britian decided to give it all back.

Needless to say that the British were quite racist to the locals who were born and raised there and ethnically were of that land rather than colonial overloads. It ranks up there with South Africa as a way long overdue vestige of colonialism that the effects still linger....
