I was raised a big meat eater but we always had a variety of vegetables too, and a big salad we ate at the BEGINNING of the meal.
But the truth in nutrition and health shall win out and I gave..
BEEF DA BOOT!

What did they mean in terms of type food eaten, quantity and frequency by a "balanced" approach?

I'm saying that, while I agree that too much meat in a diet is bad, giving it up completely is ALSO bad.
People should eat veggies, whole grains and some meat as part of a BALANCED diet. More whole grains and veggies than meat but DEFINITELY some meat. Whether that be beef, fish, chicken, tuna etc...it SHOULD continue to be part of a well balanced diet.
