The Number of Americans with No Religious Affiliation Is Rising

In recent years much has been written about the rise of the “nones”—people who check the box for “none” on surveys of religious affiliation. A 2013 Harris Poll of 2,250 American adults, for example, found that 23 percent of all Americans have forsaken religion altogether. A 2015 Pew Research Center poll reported that 34 to 36 percent of millennials (those born after 1980) are nones and corroborated the 23 percent figure, adding that this was a dramatic increase from 2007, when only 16 percent of Americans said they were affiliated with no religion. In raw numbers, this translates to an increase from 36.6 million to 55.8 million nones. Though lagging far behind the 71 percent of Americans who identified as Christian in the Pew poll, they are still a significant voting block, far larger than Jews (4.7 million), Muslims (2.2 million) and Buddhists (1.7 million) combined (8.6 million) and comparable to politically powerful Christian sects such as Evangelical (25.4 percent) and Catholic (20.8 percent).

This shift away from the dominance of any one religion is good for a secular society whose government is structured to discourage catch basins of power from building up and spilling over into people's private lives. But it is important to note that these nones are not necessarily atheists. Many have moved from mainstream religions into New Age spiritual movements, as evidenced in a 2017 Pew poll that found an increase from 19 percent in 2012 to 27 percent in 2017 of those who reported being “spiritual but not religious.” Among this cohort, only 37 percent described their religious identity as atheist, agnostic or “nothing in particular.”

You can always move to the middle east, the number of religious conservatives with their anti-abortion, anti-gay fundamentalism is still sky high.

This increase in non-religious affiliations over time seems correlated to the increase in school shootings, the increase in homelessness, the decreasing U.S. rank in science and math, higher substance abuse, increase in unethical behaviour in politics and media, and higher(?) STD infection rates.

It would be interesting to compare quality of life measures between those affiliated with religious organizations in the U.S. and those who are not.

This increase in atheism is correlated with the reduction in violence throughout the world. Proving that religious tribalism and the necessary ignorance and delusion needed for it to flourish is dangerous to man. Causes war and oppression.

The most religious people (like the evangelicals) are also the ones obstructing action on climate change, which will also lead to death and destruction.

Religion is hazardous to life on this earth.

I appreciate your work on climate change, but I must say your and Tony’s post can almost be used in support of the argument of the importance of religion in healthy societies. Especially Christianity in the U.S.

Now let’s talk about the rare pedophile priests, family value proponent adulterers, and KKK murders for a moment. The Left will take a few bad actors of a group an attempt to portray all members of that group are the same as the bad actor.

After all, God certainly gets in the way of one’s propaganda when people are listening to him and the teachings of the Bible rather than the lazy, unemployed whiner who somehow feels they are somehow entitled to what someone else has worked for.

As mentioned in other threads, the longer the Left has power in a city, the more disfunctional it becomes. Look at Baltimore with its 150 years of Democratic political control. Look at Chicago, centerpiece of gun legislation. Oh that’s right, the guns come in from neighboring states. However, these neighboring states don’t have near the gun crime problem Chicago has. Look at California. Businesses and people are leaving in increasing numbers to escape the high taxes and regulatory environment as evidenced by new “Silicon Valleys” in Washington state and Utah. Actually, California may have has a net outflow of population in the not too distant past.

Most religious people follow the teachings of the Bible. The school shooters, for example, do not. If they had, no shooting would have happened.

The ones who are still religious vote for sexual assulters, adulterers, pedophiles etc like Donald Trump and Roy Moore to lead them

My understanding is that Moore, currently married with children, was accused by the Left but not charged with a crime. Even with the negative publicity generated by the Left surrounding him, many voters decided to go with Moore rather than the Democrat. This does not say much about the Democratic candidate, does it? And no, the Moore voters were not voting for pedophilia, they were voting against the Left.

Speaking of pedophilia, etc, as a group, the Left has an overwhelming greater number of sinners their side rather than the right. Just look at STD statistics.
