The Middle East is an eternal quagmire. Everybody hates each other there. Russia wants Syria? Let them have it. Syria will never have a reconciliation in the foreseeable future and the fighting there will go on for at least another generation. The Russians will have their Afghanistan all over again. Russia has a GDP less than 1/2 of ours, a population 1/3 of ours. They can scarcely afford long term foreign interventions as such will prove to be the seeds of their next and inevitable collapse.

Syria is important to the russians. They have a naval base there, and now an air base as well. It's also basically their only foreign outpost now. Putin will crush all opposition to Assad. Don't forget, he will have the assistance of hamas and hezbollah, which are Iranian proxies. ISIS will suddenly find that being a jihadist isn't so much fun when russian helicopter gunships are tearing you apart with machine guns and SU-34's are dropping munitions on you day and night. This is night and day from afghanistan. This is desert and urban warfare, where advanced weapons and shock troops make a big difference.
Unlike the US, Putin's forces do not have to check with lawyers before they go on a mission and they aren't terribly concerned about collateral damage or winning hearts and minds. Winning is good enough for them.
For Putin this is a rare trifecta. He shows other leaders that Russia does not abandon its allies but goes to the mat for them. He cements an alliance with Iran. And, best of all, he gets to rub obama's nose in it.

As far as I can tell we were arming al queda types and calling them the moderates and there is plenty of speculation on the net Obama and Clinton were in part responsible for the rise of Isis.
Finally, after seeing the news today how can anyone think giving money and nukes to Iran was the correct strategy.
Piezoe... once again... instead of pointing to a long speech from Kerry to Obama which no one can know ahead of time if it has an correlation with the truth... could you tell us in your words... how letting Iran get nukes over time and giving them money... is a smart...

The same Iran that Obama just gave a shitload of money to as well as lifting the arms embargo. Now Iran has the money and the okay to arm up and boost their air defense systems which guarantees Iran gets a nuke.

I have to admit that the US position on Saudi Arabia is pretty horrible. They are the most extreme Islamist state in the world, but since they cooperate enough with US foreign policy they are considered an ally.
