If I had a nickel for all the completely moronic things I have done over the years, simply because I wanted to give it a try, I would be retired instead of thinking I need to work a little longer.
As far as died doing what they wanted to do, I have a friend who is a quadriplegic from doing what he wanted to do. For him it wasn't even something that he hadn't done a few thousand times before, he just didn't execute this one time. He has had pretty nasty, but fortunately short bouts with depression and wishing he had just died. Death isn't the only outcome from going to the edge, sometimes it is what you wish for after pushing to the edge and failing.
True however in two miles of water... Crushed/ asphyxiated. I also have a quadriplegic friend who jumped into a pool from a 2nd floor room, he thought it was deep as it was painted dark blue. Very similar with wishing they had not saved him off and on for years though he has motor control of two fingers which has made it possible to control a joystick so he can drive, makes a difference. He got married, has kids who he eternally embarrasses with mentioning 'electro-ejaculation babies'.
My mines were hefty, anti-light armour so I had that factored in
I'd seen the aftermath of one killing an adult rhino. Of course this was because poachers had put food as bait in the minefield which is why I was there in the first place. When I caught the guy I put him up on the tin lined HQ roof for a couple of days. Touch of sunburn and insect bites.. But better than the stoning to death the local tribal council had planned. Ah the good old days when reality was so warped from the average life expectancy in the area being 30.
