The last congressional election cycle brought the republicans into power holding majorities in both the House and Senate.
The voters who gave the republicans a majority expected some serious push back against some of Obama's ill-considered and sometimes unconstitutional initiatives. But John Boenher and many of those republicans in congressional leadership positions folded like a cheap aluminum lawn chair on every single issue and indeed they conspired with Obama to fuck their constituents... repeatedly.
The anger generated in the electorate by that betrayal is massively underestimated by the leftist MSM.
So you've got some pissed off folks. A guy shows up talking tough and calls himself a republican and many of those pissed off folks start thinking maybe he will set things aright. It isn't getting much coverage but Trump is pulling down some major numbers in some of the states he is picking up.
The MSM is saying those folks are mostly blue collar white workers in middle America. My own sense is that the MSM is mischaracterizing his support. I think it is rather broader. It is not so much about Trump personally and that is something the left is struggling to understand. He is a channel, a path for the enormous angst that is out there. In your language we're not too sure what he stands for but we like the noises he makes so we are going to give him the bat and hope he blasts one out of the park.
Cruz was never really on my personal radar at all. I watched him in Congress and remember that marathon speech thing he did and watched part of it. I came away thinking he was a blowhard and perhaps liking the sound of his own voice too much.

there's only three people who can beat Hillary and one of them just left the building. That leaves Bernie or Trump. But if I was a politician what I would be worried about is voting that straight ticket. You are speaking as a democrat looking from the outside in my friend. We see it every night on tv. The few educated who control thought in the media can't believe there are so many of us out here.
Anyone could be electable with e-mail gate hanging over Hillary's head, and Trump liable to say anything at any time. The socialist is starting to look like the safe alternative.
The puzzling thing about this to me is that Trump could have avoided all the personal stuff and still be comfortably ahead. He could have been gracious to Jeb, who was going nowhere. He had no reason to comment on Carly's botoxed face. She was what, at 2 %? He could have destroyed Rubio on amnesty. The NE story about Cruz's affairs would have had much more impact against a backdrop of congenial relations between them. Instead it got lost in the cesspool of wife bashing.
The other side of it is all the people he went after are basically unlikeable. There was a certain entertainment value to seeing them slapped about.

I see it as this is how Trump will deal with anybody who even insults the United States. He had a very reputable accountant fired for his rating on the Trump Casino. The guy is a real dick. He'll make Travelgate look like Kindergarten. But timing is everything. And a lot of us would like a real dick standing up for us (let the jokes begin.) It doesn't matter much. It's all for show. But I am tired of constantly being blamed for not working hard enough to understand. We all know how we feel and he is the only one with the courage to lay it all on the line and say it publically.
