If you don't follow euro news, you might not be aware that Scotland will be voting on whether or not to leave the UK. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-26071166
The United Kingdom is mature enough to have a civilized discussion on the subject, followed by a binding vote on the part of those who would be affected.
Reading this, it occurred to me how different the attitude here would be. We would be lectured that the country fought a Civil War to keep it entact, and it would take another one to break it up. At the same time, we supported efforts all over europe to break up countries into smaller units, eg the Soviet Union. We even fought a war against Serbia to force them to allow a province, Kosovo, to become independent. We demand that Israel give up territory it acquire d via war.
The same approach we force on weak foreign countries doesn't apply to us however. The idea of Southern independence is mocked by elites. They wouldn't consider allowing a vote of southern states.
At some point in the future we will be facing a different demand. Hispanic immigrants to the southwest will inevitably demand a separate "homeland" or to be allowed to become part of Mexico. Don't be surprised if the same liberals who disparage Southerners are sympathetic to these demands.
