Russian Forces Use Syria As Military Proving Ground

Basically, this is the military equivalent of Vladimir Putin's habit of posing shirtless for the cameras as he rides a horse or spears seals on a rubber boat.

According to a NYT article, western observers have been duly impressed by the display of Russian military prowess. They moved a lot of hardware and people in a short amount of time, and have been mounting daily air sorties in the equivalent of what the US was doing monthly. They displayed a new weapon, a long range sea-launched cruise missile. Plus, they stationed a missile cruiser with advanced air defense capability off the Syrian coast, effectively setting up their own no-fly zone. http://www.nytimes.com/2015/10/15/w...-as-proving-ground-and-west-takes-notice.html

The purpose of the exercise seems threefold. One, the obvious rescue of the Syrian regime. Two, testing out their new capabilities and giving their forces live fire experience. Three, demonstrating to the West that Russia is not to be taken lightly.

Anybody who thinks they can start a war with Russia is out of his mind. They have a massive nuclear arsenal, among which are a lot of tactical weapons, that are meant to be used on the battlefield. Their defense strategy evolves largely around the use of nukes when they are attacked.

Russia is where Carson loses me. He wants to confront them. Over what? America and Russia should join forces and destroy Isis. Great pr. Can u imagine that. Russia and America side by side exterminating global vermin. What a great way to bring our two countries closer together

America and Russia should not join forces. If Putin wants to go wipe out the terrorists(something Obama has no interest in) then fine, but we should not help them in any way. All that helping the Russians does is it frees up more Russian troops so that Putin can annex more Soviet block countries.

Remember all the saber rattling Obama did when Putin annexed Crimea? All the dems were acting like Obama was a big tough guy. It turns out that Obama giving a speech was not sufficient action to remove the Russians from Crimea. Who would have thought?

So what's your suggestion for a sufficient action to remove Russia from the Crimea? Would you have even imposed economic sanctions?

Let Russia do the dirty work in Syria. Tell Russia we approve of that, and let Russia know that after it's over, Hezzbollah doesn't have the ok to cause Israel trouble again.

I think the whole approach of the EU and the USA towards Russia is totally counter productive. Imo especially the EU should have sought some kind of partnership with Russia. Russia has the most natural resources of any country, a well educated population, thus a vast economic potential waiting to be developed. The Russians can 't do it by themselves due to rampant corruption. That's where the West should have come in and lend them a helping hand. What a missed opportunity this is after the collapse of the SU.

It baffles me why we go out of our way to have bad relations with Russia. We fomented the Ukraine issue. Russia has a legitimate interest in what happens on its borders, just as we do on ours. They are in syria at the invitation of the host government. Obama seems to have invented this doctrine that countries are not allowed to defend their regimes against islamist terrorists, but Russia obviously could care less what he thinks.

The republicans are in danger of losing me over this issue. The only two who talk any sense are Trump and Paul.
