Basically, this is the military equivalent of Vladimir Putin's habit of posing shirtless for the cameras as he rides a horse or spears seals on a rubber boat.
According to a NYT article, western observers have been duly impressed by the display of Russian military prowess. They moved a lot of hardware and people in a short amount of time, and have been mounting daily air sorties in the equivalent of what the US was doing monthly. They displayed a new weapon, a long range sea-launched cruise missile. Plus, they stationed a missile cruiser with advanced air defense capability off the Syrian coast, effectively setting up their own no-fly zone. http://www.nytimes.com/2015/10/15/w...-as-proving-ground-and-west-takes-notice.html
The purpose of the exercise seems threefold. One, the obvious rescue of the Syrian regime. Two, testing out their new capabilities and giving their forces live fire experience. Three, demonstrating to the West that Russia is not to be taken lightly.
