First of all I must say that some people in this post don't realize that they leave in a market economy...
Quote from aegis:
True, but engineers face a bigger dilemma these days. If a recent engineering grad can't find a job in his or her field immediately after graduating, it will become increasingly difficult (near impossible) to find a job in their field when things finally do turn around. Nobody wants to hire an engineer who graduated two years ago when there's a glut of engineers who just recently graduated.
So he will have only on choice... to move where his skills have value... If he doesn't find a job it means that his skills aren't skills... but just unmarketable knowledge.

1) Stop H1Bs immediately
2) Stop giving OPTs to international students when they graduate
3) Stop tossing around green cards to 50K people around the world
4) Stop issuing citizenship to any baby born to a tourist or illegal. This is so common they even have tours set up for this.
5) Throw out all illegals back to their country. Let business owners hire real Americans
Even the govt do all above it wil have a minimal effect on unemployment rate. But sill better than nothing
This is the most unamerican post that I have read on this forum. It clearly illustrate the lack of knowledge of some people. America was made by foreigner, for foreigner, against the native. I know it's hard. But as long as I know no one of us here is responsible for the past mistakes. Today the Natives don't feel anymore social pressure than other individuals...
1 ) I totally agree with you as a latter poster said, they are "slaverights"...
2 ) I don't know what's an OPT, however I know that someone who spend 3/5 years studying in Us university is as american as you...
3 ) Probabilities, are God walking incognito... A. Einstein...
4 ) This is the greatest indicator ever. It's called vote with your foot... And this, no one can stop it. It's strong, it's clear, it's total, it's the mind meet the flesh. However the day this trend will reverse, I hope that you will realize what it means early...
5 ) yeah ! throw them away !! like you do with your garbage... Don't think, trash it. You know even Kings realized this a long time ago... Your birth don't make you someone... It's just prove that you were the fastest spermatozoon... However, as the Us is market Economy, living in a false state of scarcity, it needs the most efficient person... Not because they are ( insert the word that you want ), but because they do the job better...

You should be thanking us for arpanet and riding our innovation coattails for the past 20 years.
The greatest invention of all time, based on the decentralization idea... based on sharing... based on equality. (4eveR Net neutrality ). However, the humble will always be more respected. The internet is a global field. The always expending frontier, always at the edge of the exponential... Only possible for free individual.

There are only about 2,475,956 "real Americans" (American Indian and Alaska Native)

The effect on the unemployment rate will be much higher than you think. Great suggestion.
Did you realize that they leave in a state of plentyness... where there was no scarcity... And everything was free !
Quote from slacker:
I think the H1Bs have stopped applying for U.S. jobs and large corps have stopped using H1Bs as it is easier now than every to hire local talent if you need it.
The problem has moved. At a recent presentation I attended on outsourcing it showed the bundled cost of a senior developer in India, Viet Nam and China is about $20-$30k a year. Cost for a U.S. senior developer is about $200-$250.
...
I posted a description of my problem on www.elance.com and within hours I had bids from 4 different developers located all over the world. A Russian PhD (I believe) who understood exactly what I needed sent me the code and told me I explained the problem incorrectly. Total cost $50. I asked him to make some more changes and the total cost for my game engine was $160 on my credit card. Amazing.
My point, worrying about H1B is very 1999. O
It's always a pleasure to read someone really smart... ( what's your game about ? ). That's America, sharing, innovating, making a product ready for the market... Understanding today and tomorrow issue... Not being in the past trying to analyse... How someone want to analyse an ever accelerating exponential trend ? Live the dream !

what i'm trying to learn in school, albeit impossible, is that when times are really good make sure you really cash in.
then you can withstand times like this.
grad school is just too darn expensive, and might head overseas to save money in a cheap country. no easy answers.
Yeah that's thinking... not feeling
Quote from gwb-trading:
All these corporations lobby Washington each year for more H1-B visas. During their pitch to politicians they quote the words "free market" and "competitiveness" regularly.
When someone comes to the U.S. on an H1-B visa they are locked into the employer and can not switch jobs. The employer can give poor pay and miserable working conditions, and the H1-B visa holder is stuck.
There is a simple solution to this problem. Allow all H1-B visa holders to switch jobs and state that companies can't hold them financial responsible for "relocation" or other expenses. This would force the large companies to pay H1-B visa holders properly in terms of the U.S. labor market and provide decent working environments. Otherwise the visa holder would simply go down the road and work for a different company.
This after all seems like a "free market" and "competitive" solution to the H1-B visa complaints.
Thank you for explaining the path to "slavery" ! ( to the one arrived earlier, remember it will raise you land value

)

This is nonsense!
First, H1B is alive and well. Its pace in the tech sector has slowed recently partly due to the success of the program. H1B's have completely saturated the tech industry. There is nothing left for them to take so they are moving onto other industries.
Second, H1B should be viewed as an immigration program with long term impact on the supply and demand of labor in the US. Each H1B brings over a spouse (that often begins working within a year) and also brings over other family members within a few years. So each H1B multiplies into 2-3 white collar working adults in the US every 5 years.
Third and finally, as Matloff has shown: http://heather.cs.ucdavis.edu/Mich.pdf, many H1Bs start their own outsourcing firms within a few years of gaining experiencing, hence, expediting the outsourcing problem that you mentioned above.
You don't remember the ideal of the founding father of America ?
