Look at AT&T they lost a monopoly on phone service. They seem to be doing ok now.
Except the USPS has mandates from the govt - trying to get away from Saturday deliveries, funding their pension plan, closing post offices, being told how much they can raise their rates, etc.
When a private business does this, it is generally fine. But the USPS is hamstrung by congress and other govt obs.
Also, Fed Ex and UPS do not have to deal with things like "book rate" packages, or first class mail. They cherry pick their markets. USPS has to pick up mail even from places with almost no people.
Best thing in the world would be to privatize the USPS and let it run its model according to market demands.
