Multi Monitor Video Card

Quote from Odgnut:

The point is ATI works...and works well. It only took me 1 try to find a good PCI ATI card that works perfectly well with the ATI 2400 that came with my computer.

It was easier and more affordable for me to just buy a new ATI card that works with the one that came by default with my computer...then ditch it and buy 2 Nvidias, install them, and then try to sell the ATI for a loss.

1. There might BE only 1 ATI PCI card.. and you found it. Disadvantages are the cost and cheesy fan/heat to contend with.

2. It costs MORE to add the ATI PCI card than to buy 2 NVS cards and sell the original ATI. How about that?

1. No...the ATI x1300 which is used by tons of OEM also works and here is a link to all the ATI PCI cards on Newegg...take your pick:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...48 1305520549 1069609642&bop=And&Order=RATING

2. The NVS only has 64MB of video RAM. You are assuming that everyone is using XP. If you are using XP then the NVS will work fine. If you use Vista...it requires a video card to have a minimum 128MB for the GUI to work. Also the 512MB ATI Diamond Stealth supports monitors with dual link(TWO!!) and the 2400HD also supports Dual Link.....so if I want to run 3 30 inch monitors in their native resolutions in the future....I have an upgrade path. The NVS won't run a single 30 inch...let alone 3.

I stand corrected.
I missed your old mobo only has a PCI slot.

Anyway you go, your graphic card is going to worth more than your system.

Congratulations, you have shown yourself to be a total idiot in one of the few "value-added" Forums left on ET.

My 2008 Dell computer has a PCI-Express (16x) slot along with a couple of other PCI-Express slots, not too mention a number of PCI-slots at the bottom of the case.

Unfortunately, you put your foot in your mouth when you showed the rest of the Forum that you didn't know the difference.

Again, congratulations!
:p

I'll grant you there are other PCI cards using ATI graphics engine. (However, due to possible driver conflict, using one with a genuine ATI card is a risk... one I suggest anyone avoid.)

However about NVS...

1. It comes in 64MB, 128MB, and 256MB.
2. It has a Vista driver as well as XP

You're right about NVS not running "dual link" nor 2560x1600 res... but then again, I (silly me) was presuming that "most" trading rig buyers would not be buying 30" monitors.

But aren't we getting off the point? I originally said, (1) "NVS would be a better choice for most trading rigs", and (2) "One could sell the ATI card which came with the computer and replace it with NVS with favorable price advantage".

You came back and said, "Won't work in dual-link or with 30" monitors"....

Apples vs. Fruit Salad, wouldn't you say?

make up your mind, you do you want to play games? or do you want to trade?

Why don't you just get the NVS?

1. A warning from someone who doesn't use ATI cards about the risks of using ATI cards is not very helpful to someone looking for an ATI PCI card.

If you are going to buy anything but the 64MB version of the NVS...it will costs you at least as much as the ATI Diamond Stealth...which has 512MB. Which defeats the whole purpose of someone who says they are looking for something "easy and affordable".

2. Why the hell not? Higher resolution equals more charts. I've moved from trading on 18" monitors to 20" and now to 24"...and they have always been an improvement. Bigger monitors and higher resolutions mean less need for more smaller monitors. I'd rather have 3 30" monitors than 4 24" monitors anyday.

I think you are the one that got off the point when you started bashing ATI cards although you obviously have no experience with them...and then acting like a Nvidia zealot. I never bashed Nvidia...but I do think it is easier to buy 1 new video card than to upgrade 2.

1. I warned that using a 3rd party card with a genuine ATI card might leadd to a driver conflict... and it fact it might be severe... I once had to reinstall XP over such a conflict. And I used ATI cards probably longer than you have.

2. You can get 2, NVS cards for 4 montors for about $60 on eBay.

3. I never bashed ATI... jus said, "they are in the GAMER card business, not multi-card".

4. Might be "easier" to buy 1 new video card than upgrade 2", but it's probably more expensive.

I know, I know... you've got ATI and want to talk it up. I get it. Enough already, please.

Addendum... You know of course, that ATI has come out with a line of workstation cards... they look almost exactly like Nvidia Quadro NVS... and cost about $250 each. Probably perform about the same, too. But for more money, of course.

Feel better?

1. You are not using 2 ATI cards right now...I am.

2. You can also buy ATI cards on Ebay...but I would rather buy new from a trusted retailer like Newegg.

3. Nvidia is the ultimate gamer's card. Name a top selling gaming PC...Nvidia is the card used. ATI has been in the video card business for much longer than Nvidia.

4. No it's not...if you look at the RETAIL price of both cards...it's in favor of buying 1 ATI over 2 NVS...and you get a lot more memory...and the bonus of dual link...which yes...believe it or not....some traders will appreciate.

talk about the pot calling the kettle black. I never brought up the Nvidia vs ATI issue. YOU DID. You obviously have a severe complex about it.

addendum: why should I? The cheaper ATI card I have works perfectly? You feel better?

I have no idea what you are talking about.
I have never once said anything on this thread about wanting to have a computer that plays games.

You must have me confused with another poster on the thread.

Nvidia NVS is actually their workstation card designed specifically for multi monitor use. Even says so on their website.

The Ge Force line, complete with fans, is their gaming card. Says that on their website too.

You may see gaming PC's with NVS cards, but that's not really what they were designed for.
