Quote from nutmeg:
On a side note, my main beef with minorities is you never know if they are going to do their job. Do they know their job, are they qualified, my experieince, it is hit or miss. I don't like the uncertainity. And I believe the cause of this is affirmative action. An unqualified white man gets fired, an unqualified black man is a hazard to all.
.
In my profession, you got to know all the top people as it becomes quite a small world when you specialize. AA just doesn't work for such positions even though the government tries to push in unqualified people, just like in the pilot situation where they can't qualify more than 1-2% fighter pilots. Anyway I knew personally one recipient of black engineer of the year in the US

the guy was an incompetant buffon, and he was their 'best'. It was embarassing for everyone really. The organization he worked for gave him a black boss because he kept crying racism for not being given promotion and responsibility, no matter- he still sued.
I know a few of these too

...at the top of the list you'll find a handful of good ones, but go down a little and it quickly gets embarrasing again. One guy was on this list
http://www.math.buffalo.edu/mad/special/50blacks2004.html and I am quite familiar with his work. It would not be good enough for most graduate students at a top 50 university. It is incredible that in North america where we have tens of thousands of scientists and engineers there are so few decent black ones that you could meet them all over dinner.
Mathematics, more embarrasment... but at least this guy is honest

1. Is [or was] there a Black Gauss?
2. Should a Black Mathematician have been awarded the Fields Medal?
3. Who is [or was] the most important Black Mathematician?
4. Who are the greatest Black Mathematicians?
5. Who are the young mathematicians whose careers exhibit extraordinary promise?
'I believe all but the last two questions to be foolish.'
1) Gauss is considered by many to be the greatest of all time, FYI. 2) The fields medal is the nobel of math, and 3) since there are not many important black mathematicians... well you know.
scroll down to their world hall of fame and look at the pics, 3 of 8 are obviously half white.
There is something seriously wrong here, and it isn't oppression.
