meditation as a way to calm trading angsts

which seeks to still the mind of chatter

Oh Boy! I could deffinitely use getting rid of the often deafening mental chatter for a short time each day...

I think you just said the magic words... :)

Thank you

from chessman: However Meditation, Hypnosis etc pales in comparison to Ed Seykota's trading tribe process. Unless the blocks are cleared its very difficult to make substantial amount of money in trading, by substantial I mean $10 million + during a lifetime.

chessman-- I had time to check out Seykota's Trading Tribe FAQ. Thanks so much for pointing me there. To make my comment short, it is straight practical buddhism, and at the heart of what vipassana meditation taps into. gautama Buddha was, IMO, the worlds first physicist. There were scientists in his time and many who had atomic theory models, but gautama got it right as it relates to to the transience of phenomenon and most importantly, the biochemical nature of the chain of Observation-Perception-Sensation-Reaction. His everlasting gift is not just his teachings, but describing how man can change the very structure of his mind through meditation, specifically, vipassana.

Again, thanks for the Seykota link. A community of like-minded traders amplifies efforts. Ana Maria

PS -- hypnosis is in no way a form of meditation.

I have been meditating twice a day for many years now and have found that it really helps a whole lot in everything I do, including trading.

Through Meditation...

One begins to see beyond the walls of the round room.

After the first glimpse, there is no turning back :)

Appreciation to our thread starter... Ana Maria

LOL -- I can see it now!

Word of advice for anyone who wants to take up meditation as a means toward 'better' trading -- Chewing on cactus will taste alot better...

disclaimer; I have been meditating twice daily for quite sometime now and nothing (save perhaps Coltrane) has had more of a positive effect on my trading...

PEACE and good-trading,
Commisso

Thirteen pages, that is a very good number.

This article, Stepping out of the Circle does a very good job at sifting the wheat from the chaff as it regards new age, psychotherapy, and meditation.

For those curious about meditation, what it is or isn't, and a few ideas on how to "get started", I suggest Osho's Meditation FAQ. I personally practiced the methods outlined for many years, and though vipassana is my "bread and butter" practice, the active meditations, as mentioned in the link above in which you read are not in themselves meditations, but preparations for mediation, are amazingly effective in discharging pent-up mind/body noise in preparation for still or silent meditation. Like vipasanna, I learned the active meditation methods from a teacher, not by reading or CD.

I hesitate to say go out and just do it. Sort of like the disclaimer on car commercials, "professional driver on closed course" type of thing. As Commisso said,

It's quite true. Stirring up muck that has lain dormant is guaranteed to cause pain and wreck havoc. Particularly if you are a rank beginner, having someone to guide you is a more than a good idea, it is a must. Keep it simple and seek a teacher you harmonize with. On the other hand, those that meditate, know the benefits, throughout all aspects of living and not just the trading.

I enjoyed the many replies to this thread. That there are other like-minded, like-intentioned traders out there contributes towards making trading, already a livelihood that is inherently solitary, a bit more companionable.

There is wide range of evidence that meditation or any mind relaxing techniques have strong positive influence on people's lives. I think hardly anybody who took some time to explore this, will contradict to that.

Someone mentioned TM and levitation. I think there are even contests being taken in discipline called yogic flying, which is kind of very unusual jumps done by people in lotus posture. Surf for Maharishi, yogic flying, deepak chopra if you are interested in that.

IMO we are literally creating much more of our environment than we are aware of. Look at your left arm. Look how solid it appears to be, yet we know definitely that there is hardly any material that you perceive, since atoms are above 99% "empty". And even this fraction is a mixture between states of energy and not really solid in itself. This is not esoterics, this is facts.

An experiment done in 1984 by french physicist Alan Aspect proved a mind experiment two other physicists Einstein and Rosen invented decades earlier to show that quantum mechanics is useless. The experiment showed that two particles can form a unity over space with instant "communication" between them. There seems to be something below what we call reality.

Sorry, I am seeing I am getting from apples to peaches and back again.

What I want to say is: if meditation can help us change our world, then there is something about cause and effect standard science has yet failed to discover. But if this is a feature of our mind then it is not only at place when we meditate, but constantly. Thus even if you do not use it consciously, you are still using it. But maybe quite counterproductive.

I heard somebody say once: "we all are angels, we all are devils". It is just the state of our mind ... and the problem is that the minds tends to forget very easily ...

much peace to all of you

Is there any documented levitation event? Why no one who claim levitation ability didn't pass $1M challange? http://www.randi.org/research/index.html

Quote from harrytrader:

I am happy that people look for more serenity and meditation nevertheless I am unhappy that some sects exploit this need. For example the wife of one of my associates has been completely endoctrined by the Evangelist Church and that made their life become a nightmare and they have divorced because of that.

P.S.: normally Buddishm is not a Religion in same sense as Christianity that's why perhaps people tend to adopt it more easily today because of this "new age" spirit. I am not against a new spirit but I am always enquiring behind the scene of social phenomena and when something emerge this thing is being deviated and directed for not so noble aim that's why I said that the New Age has been promoted and distorted by the New Order propagandist although many people adopting New Age are not conscious of the link and that the original emergence could have not originated from the propagandists. It's like the Bible or the Old Testament which are now claimed - by historians two years ago and published by mainstream medias - to have been falsified for political aims of War and domination on other "barbarians" world. (And as I said no proof no belief so I'm not affirming that by belief but because I have proof but that's not the subject I won't waste your meditation .

Harry-trader;
Dont like to admit it but you made some good points; especially ''Buddism is not a religion in the same sense as Christianity .Christianity is based and converges with the old and new testiment and Solomon 's proverbs.

One of the most [always current] interesting, provable LIFE patterns is the convergence and divergence between Jews-Christians.

Sorry your friends wife was indoctrinated with the church and not perhaps indoctrinated with ; old and new testament and Proverbs.and the Lord's love .
Solomon, proverbs writer, & trader did business with Arabs also.

Hey Harrytrader I know you dont base your future s [or whatever]trading or life exclusively on the National news media. News media mostly & wrongly calls downtrends ''bad or depressing''and pretend the old & new testament is ''bad or depressing''

National media ,mindlessly, without thinking, parrots stupidity like ''bubble'' WHOEVER saw a pattern like a ''bubble'' on pricecharts, including 1990;s- thru now. A clear hatred of downtrends & capitalism then and stupid skepticism of uptrends now !!!

:cool: ::)
Solomon Cohen heart felt meditation & quote '' I remember visiting the Eiffel tower when I was seven [7] years old; Cohen means priest, more in the role of sage, judge, or doctor.''
