So those working in the field of cancer research aren't scientists because they are not engineers?

My father who had two engineering degrees, electrical and mechanical used to say that the difference between a technician and an engineer is an technician follows guides, often very complex, however struggles when a problem is not already defined/solved.

An engineer should be able to solve a novel problem from first principles.
