Currently in the same boat, I have an iPhone 3G. Apparently certain things will be disabled/toned down because Apple felt the hardware couldn't handle the additional load without downgrading the experience.
Considering that they have produced excellent results so far, I would tend to trust their judgment.
Either way, you can jailbreak the device to enable MT I heard.
