probably 20% of people who vote republican are evangelicals. They vote republican because republicans are anti gay and anti abortion. When the republican party becomes socially liberal, they risk losing 20%, who will then have no reason to vote republican, because they are not fically conservative and will just vote democrat for the free hand out. Either way, evangelicals are dying off. And so are the fiscal liberals. Hillary Clinton said the greatest threat to our security is the debt. She's done a lot of business outside USA and knows we need a lot of money or a very large military.It may appear that way when one looks only at "whites" as a single, amorphous cohort. But when you start looking from the perspective of all other attributes measured in elections, it's clear that without old, Southern, wealthy, "white", Christian male turnout, the reps would never carry "whites" (as an undifferentiated cohort) again.
Your base is too narrow and elitist. Which is why you see RINOs everywhere.
