High Carb or High Fat but not both together!

Thanks for keeping it real.

Using chronometer, I made some assumptions : 50 years old, 6 feet tall and 280 lbs which would give you BMI of 38. Your basal metabolic rate would allow you to eat 2342 calories to maintain your weight. I input what an average day of eating would add up to without including any exercise.

I'm 40 and 6'2".
I've got a lot of muscle hidden under my fat. !!!
And a lot of big bones...comin outta my arse!

Here's your problem in a nutshell. You can't undo a bad eating day with a good eating day. You're stuck with the shit you ate and drank. Consistency is the key to success. Commit to 3-4 days of some type of exercise, even if it's just a mile or two walk. Stop eating in the evening. Cut out all the crap food for 6 months. Limit you're alcohol intake significantly, and quit smoking, otherwise you'll just be a thinner corpse in the end. Need motivation? Here is the absolute best motivator. A mirror. Stand in front of it naked, and I mean butt naked. Take a long look, a real long look. Get a few angle shots, turn around a couple times. Let the horror be your friend.
Yeah I don't look sooooo horrible. I'm proportional but with age has come a bigger belly and titties and the double chin which is what disgust me the most.
I've got a ton of work to do but thankfully I'm not a total train wreck.

Eat plenty of legumes. Have garden salads regularly but skimp on the dressing. Eat some nuts and seeds. Eat some healthy carbs such as fruit and whole grains. Eat omega-3-rich seafood (on the lower end of the food chain to minimize mercury content). Whole eggs are back in style, but I'd keep it relatively modest. Eat slowly and until you are no longer hungry, not until you're full.

Avoid sweets, cake and pastries. Wean yourself off sugar; that means sugar substitutes as well because you should try to get over the need for sweet stuff. Anyone who tells you that you can have all the sugar you want and that it's all in the timing is wrong.

And, as the good Captain advised, drink some water before, with, and after your meals. And in between meals. It's good for you and will help keep you sated. Further, it has been reported that we sometimes mistake thirst for hunger. Try to avoid that mistake.

Oh, and exercise.
I do all that. Love salad and eating smart.
Make my own balsamic dressing at home. Lots of water.
I need to improve significantly on the exercise bit - whenever I move a lot I find my weight drops.
Also I am doing what I can to avoid bread pasta potatoes rice and as many sweets as possible.

Look into this. https://www.myalli.com/about/
$69/120 pills. CVS etc all sell it.
It works. Blocks fat like all get out.
Not trying to be gross here, but your stools will look like you dumped a 1/4 cup of cooking oil in your toilet.
You'll drop weight fast.
Read all side the effects. I'm surprised it hasn't been pulled off the shelves yet. Each pill is 1/2 the dose of prescription Orlistat.
Controversy and holistic's aside.... if you wanna drop weight and want some chemical help....Alli.

I've come to terms, however grudgingly, that at age 65 I look better with my shirt on than off. I have this mental image of me at 40 that I just can't get too, and 20? That ain't happening. The joys of getting older, but it beats the alternative.

A carb is a carb. Complex carbs are composed of simple carbs. In the end, all carbs you digest are broken down into simple carbs, ultimately glucose or fructose.

I strongly recommend a basic biochemistry course instead of reading a lot of convoluted studies on the web.

Btw, there are plenty of hunter gatherer tribes out there who consume up to 90% carb all day and are at 13% bodyfat (yes, you can see their abs). For example, the Hazda in Tanzania fave food is honey.

Most any calorie-restricted diet will bring you down to these fat levels and almost any primitive life will force you on a calorie-restricred diet. Also, almost any primitive diet will be unbalanced either toward carbs (like your example) or towards fats (Eskimos, for example, consume 90% of their calories from fat *).

However, "extreme" low cab diet allows you to lower your body fat while retaining most of the muscle mass (and muscle strength). For me, it's the difference between 143lbs at 12%-13% body fat vs 132lbs at 7-8% body fat. The difference is crucial, since I engage obsessively in a strength-to-weight sport. Most people, however, should avoid the negative impact of low carb diet and simply try to cut down on calories.

* decided to look it up and apparently it's not true - most of their caloric input is from protein and, despite the assumptions, they are not in chronic ketosis
