Help me buy a new car (and what about cars and gender?)

I think some of the biggest bang for the buck you can get is a used Range Rover. They are insanely expensive when new, but depreciate at a staggering rate for the first couple of years. I was looking on ebay motors and was shocked at how cheap they are.

I found something about driving from a guy named Enzo Ferrari .
"At the first bend, I had the clear sensation that Tazio had taken it badly and that we would end up in the ditch; I felt myself stiffen as I waited for the crunch. Instead, we found ourselves on the next straight with the car in a perfect position. I looked at him, his rugged face was calm, just as it always was, and certainly not the face of someone who had just escaped a hair-raising spin. I had the same sensation at the second bend. By the fourth or fifth bend I began to understand; in the meantime, I had noticed that through the entire bend Tazio did not lift his foot from the accelerator, and that, in fact, it was flat on the floor. As bend followed bend, I discovered his secret.

Nuvolari entered the bend somewhat earlier than my driver's instinct would have told me to. But he went into the bend in an unusual way: with one movement he aimed the nose of the car at the inside edge, just where the curve itself started. His foot was flat down, and he had obviously changed down to the right gear before going through this fearsome rigmarole. In this way he put the car into a four-wheel drift, making the most of the thrust of the centrifugal force and keeping it on the road with the traction of the driving wheels. Throughout the bend the car shaved the inside edge, and when the bend turned into the straight the car was in the normal position for accelerating down it, with no need for any corrections." RS,

I am calling a PC violation on your liberal lawyer wife for driving a Durango. That is an SUV favored by prison guards, oil company execs and hunting guides. She should be ashamed!!!!

ps. Tom Daschle drives an Escalade.

I agree. But she is a bit nuts.

Her reasoning was that she has a long commute every day. Boca to West Palm Beach. She usually takes I-95, which is a pretty bad road as far as traffic, construction, etc, and wanted a large car. She liked driving the Lexus wagon more than the Saab, so she figured bigger was better. And one time, when she had put deisel fuel in my Saab, and had to get a loaner, they gave her a Durango. She liked it, and that was the end of the story.

She took a 3 year lease on it, and I am sure she will tire of it soon. But she likes the size, she likes the V8, and she did not get the optional 3rd row of seating, so there is plenty of room for her weekend gardening hobby.

Still, you are right. It is not a car that seems to make the political statement that would be consistent with her other (even to me) over the top liberal image. But it IS made in America, so that is all I can tell you about her choice of cars. Other than she is somewhat of a control freak, and she likes being in a BIG vehicle, but not a too noticible one (like an Escalade or Hummer). Not that they are in our budget, but not her thing anyway. I never pretended to really understand her thought processes all that well. I am sure if Israel made an SUV, she would own that. (Anyone remember the Sabra? Isreali, but a bit small! Never knew anyone who owned one, but used to see them occasionally when I was in High School).

Peace,
:)RS

I keep hearing horror stories about the reliability of these cars (they are British). And I would imagine they are expensive to maintain. But other than that, they really are nice and exceptionally stable for SUV's. The local (sort of...Ft. Lauderdale) Rover dealership has a mini obstacle course to demo how steep (longitudinally and latitudinally) the car can go without tipping. It can be a bit scary having the car tipped over sideways as far as they do.

But my buddy (who is Steven Schonfeld's brother) had the 4.0 and hated it. He just got the big Lexus SUV and says there is no comparison as far as reliability. Maybe the Rover could go where the Lexus can't, but in Florida that is not a major factor. Having the car get you to and from the grocery store or from your home to office is more important.

No mountains to climb here. No rivers to cross, (deep canals only, which NO car can cross) and no "outback" to challenge.

Certainly, in Kenya, the Rover is the car of choice. Everything here is paved.

Peace,
RS

No idea about reliability of the Range Rover. A friend has one and never seems to have any trouble. They have one advantage for your location--you sit really high in a Range Rover, I mean you look down on other suv's. Considering how many T-bone intersection crashes they have down your way, that might be a nice feature to have.
