Gun control toast

I am not a supporter of gun control. However I think the defeat of this mild Senate bill is unfortunate.

This Senate bill focused on background checks and keeping guns out of the hands of the mentally ill. It stayed away from limiting types of guns and magazines.

I think the defeat of this bill will drive the federal (and some state) governments to pursue more drastic (and absurd) gun control measures. If this Senate bill was passed, everyone would simply have declared 'victory' and moved on to other issues.

Background checks sound like a great idea, until you look at the facts.

If more guns laws were the solution to our "problem" we wouldn't even have a problem. We already have 22,000 (not a typo) federal state and local firearms regulations in this country.

The Columbine shooters violated something like 20 different guns laws acquiring their weapons. Would a few more guns laws have stopped them?

The CO theater shooter walked right into a "gun free zone". So called gun free zones don't work either.

I wasn't talking about just a new law, but a system that would make it easy and enforceable to punish dealers who break the law in exchange for decreased gun control for law abiding gun owners. I would be surprised if you wouldn't support that. Keep in mind, I'm NOT talking about the real life bill that got shutdown yesterday, but the hypothetical compromise I posted in this thread.

basically,

1) a national database that lists convicted felons and people diagnosed as insane that dealers have to check before making a sale. And prosecution if you sell to someone on the list.

2) repeal the NFA, or something similar. I'm talking legalize full automatic rifles without the annual registration, and no more extra tax or red tape for silencers, SBRs etc. Basically if you aren't on the list then you can purchase whatever you want without incurring additional expenses and going through miles of red tape.

I would expect libs to not go for this, but it would be an actual compromise where both sides get something and that makes sense to me.

I hate to say it this way, but I don't actually care lol, i know that no law is going to stop a sick fuck from killing people, BUT dealers really shouldn't be selling to criminals and with a database there is no excuse. Also, while it might turn into another bureaucracy, it absolutely doesn't need to. Why would the govt need more money to do this when they already have the BATF and all of these other fucksticks on payroll.. just make it part of their job. The point of the deal (for me) is to get back part of our 2nd Amendment that has been taken away. The libs just lost on their one-sided bill, and right now the reps could put them in a catch 22 by offering something like this.
