Getting Proper Sleep During The Trading Week?

Quote from rc5781:

Stop taking sleeping pills.

Keep the same sleep routine weekdays and weekends.

Do a cardio workout couple hours before going to sleep.

Don't eat after 6pm, digestion may be keeping you up...

Don't drink alchohol...
i would also add a good foam mattress or topper at least. i was very skeptical, but after i bought 2" topper-man...what a difference it makes. Back pain goes away, you sleep deeper and wake up well rested. Make sure you buy good quality product, not cheap, smelly sh*t from china

I have heard it is not so fun to quit this medicine.

What sedatives did you take and how much? For how long? Did you take them during the day and to sleep at night?

Quitting is not at all fun. If your body becomes acclimated to them (which mine was) it can be unimaginably hard.

I used to have migraine headaches so I had taken fiorinol w/ codeine (do not take this medication if you have headaches because my doctor said stopping can cause seizures, which is a combo of a barbiturate and codeine. I did originally take them during trading hours because it helped me relax when I was in a high risk trade or when a trade I was in had a retracement. As I became a better trader and stopped taking the meds I became more patient and these situations no longer bothered me.

That's hard core man.

I bet juicing would be good for trading too. Seriously.

*ahem*

Stick with test or something of that nature. No Deca, and stay they hell away from Tren. You DO NOT want added stress when you're on that shit. Anyone who knows about it will agree. lol

Hard enough to sleep with that shiz as it is. No added stress needed.

You are so kind to think other peoples problems are funny.
I wish you the best

Thanks for all the great replies.Keep em coming. All suggestions welcomed.

I dont drink-hardly- or smoke....Also i dont drink coffee.
I eat healthy- no junk or fast foods.I also avoid foods that are inconspicuously loaded with sugar like yogurt, orange juice, peanut butter etc...(ironically sugary foods make me drowsy but also make me non functional-this is a whole other subject but i quit sugary foods 2 yrs ago and i immediately required much less sleep and had more energy and didnt feel drowsy all day long ).

I think by nature i am an evening person...I would love to start trading at 9 30 like east coast folks but i love the west coast.

My body is different :eating before sleep actually makes me more tired and late day exercise keeps me up at night...I will try making sure i am properly hydrated but not too much...

Also this sleep problem doesnt exist on weekends...however i do still take a pill to ensure i will get a full 8+hrs so that i get my catch-up sleep on friday+saturday night...I have tried doing weekend without sleeping pills and my sleep pattern is all over the place.I cant relax.

I dont hold overnight positions-rarely.

During the trading week it is also very hard for me to catch naps despite being so tired.I will fall asllep for like 10mins and then wake up and psych myself into beleioving that i have had a great power nap...Wheni first started daytrading 8 months ago i could fall asleep during the trading hours. But now i dont want to miss a thing.

Last night i caught a rare nap from 6pm-730 pm...It felt so good At about 12 midnight i took my pill and fell asleep hard at 2 30 am.I woke up at 10 30 am and was elated that i had had 8 hrs sleep!!!Plus the 90m minute nap in the early evening!

I know this is stuff is all about psychology i wish i could train my mind to relax.

Seriously stop the sleeping pills. I have had insomnia since began day trading. I am stressed about making money and I am very passionate about trading, I really love it. I had been taking sleeping pills for 2 1/2 years since beginning trading. 10 days ago I said enough. The are addictive, all of them, and you will build up tolerance. I had to keep taking more and more. I have tried everyone.

The first couple of nights w/o them were rough. After that I have been able to sleep 6 hours on avg and I feel much sharper when I trade.

Do you feel hazy when you wake up? I sure did. It messes with your ability to trade.

You sound like me so let me give you some advice. Work out in the morning, before trading ( hard on West Coast ) or schedule time say during the NY or Chi lunch hour when trading gets slow. If you are feeling hungry and can't sleep eat a fruit or vegetable that is high in fiber.

Consider taking up meditation or hypnosis you will feel much less stressed and relaxed.

One other suggestion. Get off the computer 3 hours before you want to sleep. Watch some boring tv with the lights off in your living room, you should not have a tv in your bedroom. Bright lights shut down your brain's production of Melatonin the natural sleep hormone.

It's funny but when I visit my wife's family in Europe I always sleep great. Maybe no stress on vacation, but I walk so much more than sitting at a desk, probably 3 miles a day on avg.

Lastly if you need a caffeine boost drink green tea. For some reason it easier to stop green tea without the headaches.

Good luck

I'm not laughing man. I'm dead serious. I didn't mean any disrespect to you. I know that shit's a bitch to kick.

When Valium first came out, the doc prescribed it to my grandmother, because my granddad was in Vietnam for the third tour, they made it out to be like candy back then, and they had no idea how harsh kicking it would be.

One day after a year or so of taking it my grandmother ran out of it and didn't want a refill, and a day or so later she started geting extremely sick and blacking out and stuff.....

Scariest thing was she had no idea what in the world it was from, because back then they didn't know how careful yyou had to be coming off stuff like that.

Definitely not laughing at you man. But I am dead serious about the juice thing.

Yep I agree. Check out the book "Lights Out" for some science behind the lights in the bedroom thing.

I live in San Diego and I wake up about 4.15 without an alarm clock. I take naps most days from about 2-3.30. It helps. On weekends I try to go to bed the same time and get up no later then 7.

I moved back to Atlanta for a year thinking that the east coast time zone would help but I found I preferred the west coast time and moved back last summer.

I found that by the time the market opened on the east coast at 9.30 I was sick of waiting for it. I also really like having the pm's free. It affords an opportunity for another career such as real estate, recruiting, mortgage etc.

I just like the west coast the east coast can kiss my ass.

John

I guess it depends where you move. I wouldn't live in Atlanta either. I am moving to Charleston, SC. Golf courses and 2 miles from the Ocean beaches.

i am not addicted to them...nor do i have any withdrawal symptoms when i stop taking them....FRom 2002-2006 i never took them...I only started up again when i started daytrading 8 months ago and couldnt fall asllep til 3 am and then have to wake up at 6 30...When i leave town for vacation i sleep like a baby without them...however when i go camping or backpacking i take them because i get anxious about being woken up by bears and other animals and the moonlight so i have to take pill to ensure a smooth deep sleep.

The tv advice is good.Yes i have 1 in my bedroom as well as my computer....I am addicted to watching cnbc after the market(not cramer tho). And i know i have to stop and have tried....

Earplugs is very good advice also.I recently started using them as i live about 300 ft from one of the busiest freeways in the world!I had recently started focusing on the freeway noise and i think they cut down some trees near the freeway that previously did a great job at reducing the noise.
Also i have the bedroom windows covered with a plastic/rubber type of window covering.I now sleep on the bed with my feet at the window not my head.

Maybe you need to reset your body clock. Take a week off trading or whatever activities are preventing or distracting you from having a regular sleeping cycle. Your body may have gotten too used to the current routine. You can allow yourself to sleep in on a weekend for 12 hours and see if that helps. I find that when I lack sleep and my mind KNOWS that there are no consequences at all to waking up late there is more likelihood I won't wake up prematurely and that I'll get a good night's rest.

Your ability to sleep better on weekends suggests to me your sleep problems may be linked to anticipation expectation or excitement associated with what you are doing on weekdays. Do you enjoy trading? Do you find it exciting or do you find it boring? Stressful?
