I would need to disagree, the UK has applied a very selective immigration policy. An independent country can do what it pleases, however, when you are bound to a union with benefits then that comes with responsibilities, too. One can hardly say that East Europeans constituted asylum seekers, especially not post 2000. However, policy of the European union, with its subscription to uphold human rights and foster humanitarian aid, is to at least investigate whether asylum claims are valid. The UK has refused and "opted out" of most asylum programs and rather watches how other European nations are "burdened". Instead it enjoys granting visa to educated Indians, Russians, what have you. UK policy is to "let the other European countries deal with the "dirt" and the educated crop is welcome to apply in the UK. That has nothing whatsoever to do with solidarity. In that the rest of Europe should be much more vocal in rebuking UK complaints about a few thousand asylum seekers that cross the channel.
On immigration I partly side with sheda in the sense that UK was the nation to accept unlimited EU immigrants from the "new" EU countries in 2004, Sweden did this too. Germany claimed these people would overrun and ruin Germany etc. Ironically it did not happen and currently the Brits enjoy a higher quality of living.
However, I resent the Brits and Americans falling for what I call the "nazification" of German culture, which has been the goal of the Zionist Jews for quite some time - any mention of Germany ends up with some old and worn out Hitler joke.
I doubt Brits would like it if when they were mentioned, people would start saying "hey, beat up any Indians today?".

Within the next 20 years half of german workers will become pensioners, without immigrants the country is screwed, some reports estimating up to 500,000 migrants a year are needed until 2050. If germanys survival did not depend on importing masses of people do not pretend for a second you would be acting in "solidarity" to take them in.
