I went down behind the house and the gas tank does have a shut off valve so before i move the dryer and washer unit out of it's enclave and possibly pop that line-- I'll turn off the gas downstairs!

Most will have a shut-off valve behind the dryer.
I'd use that if you can reach it rather than the tank valve. If you have a propane furnace and/or water heater you may have to relight the pilot light(s) if you close the tank valve. Newer models will have electronic ignition.
