TZ, perhaps you should do *your* homework before popping off regarding others.

ROFLAO.

I have done my homework. If Smily has the pedigree he claimed, then he mostly wasted his time. The rank amateur label remains.

I doubt he would last long in a discussion about the depth of scripture.

Carl Sagan: You can't convince a believer of anything; for their belief is not based on evidence, it's based on a deep-seated need to believe.

Quote from smilingsynic:

The so-called prophecies are so vague that any number of individuals could claim that they were the Messiah.

Unsupported statement. Prove this, using your claimed Bible background.

I have conducted much more than a cursory look. I have a degree from an evangelical university (minored in Bible), and have a Ph.D. in religious history.

Believe me, I know my Bible!

No, you don't.

If Jesus fulfilled the prophecies so obviously, then why did the Jewish people reject him. After all, the Old Testament is THEIR holy book.

This immediately ranks you very low on the knowledge scale that someone who "went to an evangelical university" would say. Even relatively newer Christians know of the existence of passages that it was God's intention to hide it from Israel. You "know your Bible" and cannot even recall the Old Testament saying in multiple places that they would reject him??????????????????????????????????

Let us try this one from Zechariah 12, where Israel will grieve and bitterly mourn the fact that they pierced him.

10 "And I will pour out on the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem a spirit of grace and supplication. They will look on me, the one they have pierced, and they will mourn for him as one mourns for an only child, and grieve bitterly for him as one grieves for a firstborn son. 11 On that day the weeping in Jerusalem will be great, like the weeping of Hadad Rimmon in the plain of Megiddo. 12 The land will mourn, each clan by itself, with their wives by themselves: the clan of the house of David and their wives, the clan of the house of Nathan and their wives, 13 the clan of the house of Levi and their wives, the clan of Shimei and their wives, 14 and all the rest of the clans and their wives.

I cringe at the cut and paste internet answer you will try.

No correlation. Not fulfilled. Not likely to be fulfilled. Clearly, I'm not dead. Why should anyone mourn? It's a time for gladness. Our Father does not subject anyone to this kind of abuse as the price of salvation. He does not blind. He does not withhold blessings. He does not impose sight on the unwilling. Does not toy with his Son. He leads him Home by the Holy Spirit. The Spirit does not lead the Son into a ditch, only to pull him out later.

"Peirced" is not sufficient to point Zechariah's lament to anything other that his own circumstances in his own day. Read the entire context, in context. The idea of a messiah is highly qualified in folklore. I did not meet those qualifications. Judas wished to place me in a position in which I would rise to meet the most commonly held messianic prejudices. I would not. My Kingdom is not of this world, and never will be. Therefore I will not be back to crush Israel's enemies so-to-speak.

If you want to be saved, follow me. I do not need lip service. What did I teach? Believe it. Take it to heart. Practice it. I may be a messiah, but not anything the prophets expected. Vicarious salvation is a myth. Our Father asks you to be merciful, not to look for sacrifice. There is no price you can pay for the Kingdom. No price asked. Renounce the world. Is it a sacrifice to renounce the world? I think not. It is nothing to me, nothing to our Father, and ultimately, it is nothing to you, whose will is one with our Father.

Isaiah 61
The Year of the LORD's Favor
1 The Spirit of the Sovereign LORD is on me,
because the LORD has anointed me
to preach good news to the poor.
He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted,
to proclaim freedom for the captives
and release from darkness for the prisoners, [a]
2 to proclaim the year of the LORD's favor
and the day of vengeance of our God,
to comfort all who mourn,

3 and provide for those who grieve in Zion—
to bestow on them a crown of beauty
instead of ashes,
the oil of gladness
instead of mourning,
and a garment of praise
instead of a spirit of despair.
They will be called oaks of righteousness,
a planting of the LORD
for the display of his splendor.

This was not fulfilled with Isaiah. I appropriated it, regardless. Was it written for me? Does not matter. I made it about me. My brothers may appropriate it for themselves, as I did, if they are willing to step up. Who will take it to the next level? You? Who will bring it to fulfillment? This is not speaking of an earthly Kingdom. It is speaking of the return of the wayward "prodigal" Son to his inheritance. Israel symbolizes that Son...dispersed, superstitious, confused, blinded...returning to its true inheritance. This has nothing to do with Zionism. That is not the inheritance I speak of. It has everything to do with anyone who will follow me home. Where is the despair in that?

Carl Sagan: You can't convince a believer of anything; for their belief is not based on evidence, it's based on a deep-seated need to believe.

Carl had not yet made the correlation between space and belief because he could see no evidence of mind over matter. Matter, and the space in between, is the evidence of an ancient macro belief. Before that belief, there was no evidence. The evidence then invokes belief. Whatever the evidence is called - "matter", "space", "time", "energy", "conciousness" - it is a way of masking circular logic: A deep-seeded belief produces evidence, and the evidence seeds belief. Belief in the evidence is called "science". Belief without yet any evidence is called "faith". Blessed are they who have not yet seen, but believe in what can be seen. They shall have the evidence. In this upsidedown world, you cannot see what you do not believe. Whatever you do see, you see it because you have believed it. This is not how it works in the Kingdom. But to return, you must use the laws of this world in reverse. This requires a change of mind about the mind itself.
