Hehe, finally a friendly thread and so many participants. Strange....

I saw Satriani 8 years ago. Eric Johnson 5 years ago, Vai last year (nobody mentioned him yet). I liked all, but as show goes, Vai was the best.

Yngwie is coming to town in 2 weeks, and although I am not that crazy about him, I will give him a chance... :)

I get guitarlessons on On-Demand and teaching-wise Vai was the best teacher. Although the most impressive was Michael Angelo, playing his own invention double-necked V guitar with 2 hands. You really have to see it, to get the point...

P.S.: It is really silly to list best solos, best looking actresses, best films or whatever. There are so many excellent guitarplayers, and music is an artform, thus there is no such a thing as measurable best, it is all subjective.

So just turn on your speakers, kick back with a beer, and enjoy!!!

Angelo is top notch as far as technical ability is concerned. I can't listen to the stuff though! Remember his band, Nitro? LOL! Jim Gillette is still married to Lita the last I heard!
Yngwie live is something to see. He plays with a flare I think other "shredders" lack. Give us a review after the show!

yes...an outstanding lute player as well!! but the classical guitar is his primary instrument.

sorry...i'm not familiar with Yngwie. as far as electric guitar goes...hendrix is my man. but there are many great players. to each his own.
 
Eric Johnson was a fixture at Antone’s in Austin in the early 80’s…as was Stevie Ray Vaughan, among many other greats.

Last time I saw Joe Satriani was in 1988 in Denver in one of those clubs right off 16th St.

I only wish could've seen Duane Allman at the Fillmore East.
 
Loooove the Satriani. My favorite song of his is Mystical Potato Head Groove Thing. I read an interview with him a few years back where he said that was the song of his that he had the most trouble playing. He was always annoyed at Steve Vai (in a friendly kind of way) because he never had any trouble playing any of Satch's stuff. He said, in fact, that Vai was technically the best guitarist he had ever seen. I've seen alot of guitarists live, including Vai, and I've seen some that could hang with him, but I can't think of anyone that I could say is better.

There are so many good guitarists/songs/solos, it is too hard to pick! Here are some of my faves:

Satriani
Tore Ostby (Conception, Ark)
Jeff Loomis (Nevermore)
Michael Romeo (Symphony X)
John Petrucci (Dream Theater)
John Williams (he didn't just write Star Wars music, he can play the dickens out of an acoustic guitar)
Nuno Bettancourt (Extreme)

I really enjoy seeing people do unique things with guitars. Check out the video of Kaki King playing at www.kakiking.com . That's good stuff. Also saw Victor Smolski of the german metal band Rage doing som CRAZY stuff live during a solo.

OK, I know who you're talking about. Yes, I agree.... outstanding talent.
Yngwie applies classical theory (harmonic minor/ phrygian scales) and chops to hard rock.
