No, what I said was that you cannot pit individual right or left candidates against candidates on the other side because there are too many options. Until it's down to two candidates, all you do is split the vote. Here, allow me to simplify it for you - I can tell you're confused.
When you poll 5 candidates on the right (or vice versa) with one candidate on the left (or vice versa) you're splitting the base of voters on one side but not on the other. Therefore, polling early doesn't amount to shit.
For example: Polling Rand Paul against Hillary won't give you an accurate measure, because the republican voting base is more segmented. You can't poll Bernie against Chris Christie either, for similar reasons. Once the voting base is solidified under one candidate, you can do that. But until then, ...nope.
