Really? You’re trying to criticize Canada as having a gun violence problem from America. How does this make sense to you?

I am criticizing Canada for its gun control laws not working at all... and they appear to desire to be a "me too" -- just a copy of the U.S. The Canadian envy is obvious -- they even want to copy our shootings.

Dude, we have eight times the gun violence rate as Canada. It’s not even close. Their gun laws are obviously working.

Yet every year gun violence is rising in Canada... they are working hard to catch up. As in most things though in North America -- they still place a distant second.

The gun-gap with Canada closing is a grave concern.

Did you know that the USA has only 393,000,000 guns? Just 46% of the world total in 4% of global population? That is not enough. I won't be satisfied until every single American is required to have two firearms and, if not, pays a fine.

Are you saying Canada is trying to catch up and sad they are in second place again. Sort of how Toronto always tries to compare itself to New York City and are sad when the realization hits they fall far short.

Being a citizen of both countries...I would say the statistics favors Canada.

Without looking at any historical numbers considering I've spent more years living in the United States than Canada...

Year 2021 has seen a dramatic increase of gun violence in comparison to prior years but a fair comparison would be to wait until the end of the summer months considering the summer statistically see an increase in gun violence.

Then again considering we all like to look at some type of statistics from the recent past...

• The U.S. has the 32nd-highest rate of deaths from gun violence in the world: 3.96 deaths per 100,000 people in 2019. That was more than eight times as high as the rate in Canada, which had 0.47 deaths per 100,000 people.

Yet, I do not like using "gun violence" as a measure of the quality of life in a country. Simply, typically a country listed in the top 5 on a list of Best Countries to live in...they typically have low gun violence and its something that does not consume daily political debates about gun control.

By the way, I also subscribe to a cable package that allows me to get some U.S. channels with my Canadian channel package. In fact, I think its part of some cable law that requires a certain number of English channels (I could be wrong about that).

There's clearly more shooting stories on the few U.S. channels that I subscribe too than all of my Canadian channels. It has always been that way since I moved to Canada.

To be fair, I don't know which country is growing the fastest in gun violence...at least so far in 2021...it would seem that the United States is easily outpacing Canada in gun violence. We should soon see the statistics for comparison in 2021.

Yet, I'm not naive. I know there's a statistical relationship of gun violence to the number of civilians that own guns.

That's the point...Canada does not want to keep up with countries like the United States in gun violence.

Regardless, the "best country" involved the following...

I think I will change my tune if / when the Capitol of Canada in Ottawa was ever stormed by insurrectionists and then see a particular political party try to pretend it either didn't happen, say that the people was on a leisure tour or that Covid deaths are fake news.

More of the above occurring in the United States than Canada. There's violence in Canada...haven't seen anyone here at ET pretend there's no violence nor pretend gun control laws are doing their job.

There's just too many loopholes in the gun control laws in both countries...more so in the United States but that's more of a historical problem related to the birth / rights of the citizens.

It's an issue I think will never be resolved in either countries because there's just too many weapons already in the hands of civilians...easily transferred legally and illegally to another civilian.

Canada progressed. The US not so much it seems. It's kind of pathetic when Americans try to excuse all the obvious growing social problems in their country by saying 'but hey, look at Canada, same problems ...'. Uh, no. We are a much more advanced nation then the US in terms of social programs and harmony. Nobody said it's perfect here, but it's a hell of a lot better then the US.

Yes... but there are many things that Canada is not well-ranked in. In healthcare they are ranked only one slot ahead of the U.S. -- though in some years France is ranked in between. Generally Canada is ranked at the bottom of first world countries that have a public health plan year after year. This is not an enviable position.

In the reality there are numerous things that both Canada and the U.S. can do better in -- a lengthy list for both countries. But Canadians trying to slam the U.S. educational system and many other things -- need to understand the Black-White achievement gap in public education is wider in Canada than in the U.S.

There are many places/things where each country under-performs. Slamming one country -- while not understanding the problems of the other in context -- is nothing more than an exercise in futility and does not actual create a conversation about improving anything.

In regards to gun control -- I have put forward my points regarding improving gun control in the U.S. numerous times on ET. But nobody wants to have a serious discussion about it. Nor does anyone want to have a serious discussion about addressing the U.S. illegal immigration situation with comprehensive reform.

The question, did they pretend in Canada that it didn't happen, insurrection people were doing nothing wrong and it was just like a leisure tour of the Capitol.

• I would say no considering what happen in Montréal...they burned down the damn building. You know the French...we are people of protest and riots. Fight to the death.

Regardless, political / government violence from the 1700's - 1800's was a given considering the time era of the birth of the United States 1776 and Canada 1867.

The latter, Canada was still forming country in 1849 and there were several different countries involved trying to stake claims on Canada at that time especially in Québec...a place that has always and still do...wants to be an independent country within Canada.
