The question, did they pretend in Canada that it didn't happen, people were doing nothing wrong and it was just like a leisure tour of the Capitol.
Regardless, political / government violence from the 1700's - 1800's was a given considering the time era of the birth of the United States 1776 and Canada 1867.
The latter, Canada was still forming country in 1849 and there were several different countries involved trying to stake claims on Canada at that time especially in Québec...a place that has always and still do...wants to be an independent country within Canada.
