For those who are confused about what constitutes a legitimate use of firearms:
ALGODONES, N.M. -- A Sandoval County deputy shot a teenager after the boy pointed his rifle at deputies in an Algodones neighborhood last week, according to New Mexico State Police.
Sgt. Damyan Brown confirmed the person shot in the incident was 17 years old.
State police said the teenager was under the influence of alcohol when he took a high-powered rifle with a scope out into the streets on Aug. 7. Investigators said he also pointed the rifle at unarmed residents.
Deputies at the scene tried talking to the teen, but state police said he pointed his gun at them, leading a deputy to shoot him two times.
The teen is currently listed in stable condition at UNM Hospital.
Last week, a family friend told KOB the teen was upset after losing his job. She said the family had just returned from a camping trip when the shooting happened. She also said the rifle belonged to the teen because he uses it to hunt.
Please note that the kid isn't dead. This may be because the cop knows how to use a gun, and even though this was the first time he'd had to shoot somebody, he did it correctly.

Another complete repudiation of the facts. John Crawford was aiming an air-gun at children in a WalMart. A replica of an FN SCAR (I own one). Shoppers call 911 stating the aforementioned. Cops appear and demand that the guy drop the weapon, which he refuses to do, but tells them it's "not real."

The unverifiable account is that the cop (car) was so close to both perps that when he opened his door it struck them and they pushed it closed abruptly pushing the cop back into the car. The cop took exception to this and started to pull his gun when the victim then attempted to take possession of the gun by entering the car and assaulting the officer. When the cop managed to get his gun out and get a shot off in the car the victim then ran away. Apparently the cop exited his car and unloaded on the fleeing perp when he did not comply with commands to stop and get on the ground.
As previously noted, when you are a man of exceptional size you have to exhibit a higher level of passivity during encounters with the police. If you are suspected of having robbed a business just a few minutes earlier you need to know that you are going to be treated like an armed robber until the cops can determine you are not armed.
Big guys make cops nervous. I've experienced it myself.
Some people consider an air gun to be a toy because it uses air to propel the projectile rather than an explosive.
