weird how "the constitution" had no objections to forgiving ppp loans, auto maker loans, crumbling banks loans, etc...
Auto/Bank bailouts were voted in by the legislature, not mandated by the Executive like the student loan attempt. That's the difference. Perhaps you should spend more time understanding the difference?
Just remember that when Dems make DC,PR and a few other territories states giving them up to 12 new permanent Senate seats
I’m going to grab onto this and remark on the overall state of this as I see it.
To the court, I don’t think it is as cut and dry as republicans want to make and I think Gorsuch and Barrett are not in the bag on this.
To be fair to the situation, I’m not sure congress expected this level of forgiveness but at the same time they did not limit the level of forgiveness in the legislation. So it is essentially up to the executive to administer.
Thomas seemed to focus in on the term “waiver” but I don’t think there is much support among the right wing justices for harping on this. It would really put a lot of other laws and EOs in doubt.
Then there is the issue of injury and standing. That was a big fail, obviously. Something about the Missouri student loan bank, which is a private bank not connected to Missouri’s government suffering some injury even though it did not sue nor is it a part of the government of Missouri.
But this is a very political court, as we have seen in the past prudence and precedent be damned.
If the forgiveness was passed into the law by the Congress, the SC can make a distinction to separate out that from the student loans if they need to draw a line. I think the SC might simply decide the power to forgive billions in obligations to the government rests with the people via congress...

Uh, on what basis? There is no size provision in the text. You’re advocating the court should assume congressional intent when they really should not, even though it is likely they did not envision the scope of something like what Biden did.
And I totally get well the Supreme Court can do whatever it wants. But seriously on what legal basis are you relying on, or is this just a guess of what they will do?
