I think it's somewhat of an illusion that one of those places could provide returns or even safety if you believe the U.S. is on some kind of debt precipice. The U.S. economy is a big enough part of the world economy that, as they say, when the U.S. coughs the rest of the world catches a cold. I'd say keeping on with the lemonade making with maybe some downside puts is a pretty good strategy.

This isn't a very coherent thought. Like I quite clearly indicated in my example, you have your causality completely mixed up. Do you think it is Capital One's fault that I'm in debt because they offered me low credit card rates and I subsequently ran up credit card debt in the example I gave? Do you think I should just arbitrarily stop making my credit card payments even though I can easily afford them because I think my debt is too high? You're advocating for both those positions, and both are clearly nonsense.

The premise of this thread is that it's the Fed's fault that we have a large national debt and somehow the lack of a firm debt ceiling is also to blame, not the congress and president who authorized the spending that incurred. That's an idiotic position borne out of profound ignorance, and nothing said here supports it.
The reason the Fed lowers interest rates and the impact they expect to have on the economy are no mystery, they're plainly spelled out in the fed meeting minutes. You have read those, right? If you had read them, you'd realize that again, you have the causality upside down. It may very well be that in a specific situation the debt generated by congress and the president causes the economy to slow down and the Fed lowers interest rates in response to that slowing economy. I'm not sure we have a case of that yet, but even if we had that in no way means the Fed caused the debt. It's especially rich that you all are arguing about the Fed causing our debt while we have a Congress and President as we speak trying to add trillions to the debt. Where's your outrage about that?
We could have an interesting discussion about enablers. If you were arguing that the Fed is like an enabler in a relationship with an addict you might have a point. But again with another analogy, the addict is the addict, not the enabler, and the rant that started this post is unquestionably unsupportable.
