A metal pipe, I'll shoot them.
A can of mace to spray me with, I'll shoot them. Why? Well after they've disabled my vision and breathing with mace, I'd have a reasonable fear they would disarm me, and use my weapon to kill me, so yes, I'd shoot them.
A gang of thugs, I'll shoot them.

Don't want to have to do that, and will avoid the situation to begin with. However, if I can't get out of it, I'm shooting them. Whether they live or die after that is out of my hands. THEY were the aggressor, not me. I was just the one with the element of surprise, and 5x'd the thug(s)

God damn you are dense kid. Do you know anything about probabilities? Your two scenarios are not equal. The odds of you being hit by a stray bullet are pennies on the dollar compared to the odds of you getting shot if you are actually being attacked.

Who do you think would have better training on the handling and firing of hand guns - regular citizens such as yourself, or a police officer? Police are taught and retaught that when firing at an assailant, you aim for the chest, not his leg or shoulder. A center shot. Because 1) it is easier to hit that than a leg that is 1/3 to 1/4 as wide a target, and 2) it is more effective in neutralizing the threat quickly and with as little collateral damage as possible. If you know any cops, ask them about this. (of course, they are taught not to use their guns unless necessary, but if they have to, this is their training.)

Mav, I'll throw in 2c learned from my law enforcement training. Trust me, you would not go for a "flesh wound" when someone is either shooting at you or a few feet from you with a big knife/machete intending to cut you up. You don't shoot to kill, you shoot to disable the aggressor, to stop the aggression. Period.

Center-mass as LEAPup mentioned is selected because in an incredibly stressful situation where your life is in danger that location gives you the best chance of stopping the aggressor. Again, you're not trying to "just injure" the attacker or even kill the attacker, you are trying to stop the aggression by the quickest means possible. Multiple shots in center-mass (remember, the target is often moving around) gives you the best chance.

You nailed it! Great post! There's a book I'd recommend guys read who are serious about using a firearm to protect themselves, and it's called "Stress Fire" by Massad Ayoob. (No, I don't know his nationality. Lol He's a die hard American though) It's an older book written in the 80's, but is THE book for someone wanting to learn to protect themselves with a firearm.
