Why the car dealerships are folding

i sell cars @ a honda dealership and things aren't that bad. we have slowed down some but it's mostly the time of the year. Honda and toyota will continue to grow and gm and f will continue to lose market share. our dealership had it's best year in 08.

Many of us believe they should let the Detroit 3 go by the wayside and allow Toyota, Honda, Nissan, VW to pick up the demand.

yep i agree. I drive a 68 camaro and im a fan of gm's older products (pre 72) but you can't justify trying to save a company just because it's a big part of americana. Toyota and honda just make a better product.

ill be the first to admit gm makes the best sportscars for the money. cts-v and zr-1's are unbelievable for the money. but comparing the average man's civic to a cobalt is a joke. p.s congrats you picked an exceptional vehicle!!!

"Toyota and honda just make a better product"

They do but the biggest problem I have with American cars is having to deal with the shitty dealerships with service and warranty issues.

If I have a problem with my Lexus ( which is rare) the dealership is ON it and they fix it and act like they give a shit.

Go to some GM dealer and try to get something done. They are thieves.

I have a garage kept, never off road, 9 year old 4-runner with 61k miles and never a repair and original battery. Guess what, a neighbor tried to by it from me about a month ago.

Texrex and Murray the Turtle....Good points.

Texrex, I would say that sales numbers of the last two quarters are close to "Stop" as you can get, for now. I do think sales of New Cars will drop further and the biggest decline will be in the months going forward.

Murray,

Sure, I would imagine that all local and regional banks will lend if it looks like they will get their money back. So, their lending standards reflect that "Want". For example: I don't think you can be a day labor in Texas, with out a w2, no assets, with less than a grand in the bank and go to "Frost" to acuqire a loan.
On the same not, I do not believe you can be a 9 2 5er, in Debt, making the average salary for that region, and think you will get a loan. This is camp is the majority of the people in the US.

So, while your banker friend is correct in that they will lend if they get their money back, I would believe he means to individuals who qualify under their "Strict lending rules. Otherwise, his bank will be part of the expect 1000 to go under in 09.

Also, if you look at the car (sticker prices) prices compaired to the "Panic" the Big 3 show, sure does not seem as if they want to push those cars off the lot. I have yet to see in San Antonio (Not really in the market for a US car) any true drop in prices for Ford, GM, etc. I do see 10 year financing now with zero down and zero % for 7 years. But the prices seem to be the same.
==========================

EMR-GLO;
As you may have figured , its an old fashioned local bank;
requires an HONEST appraisal for real estate also,LOL.........

Researched HMC, NSANY, TM , drove them quite a bit;
frequently you see them lasting 200,000-300,000/more miles
Auto transmission may need a bit of work @ 200k miles.

Like a GM Saturn, but its not just GM labor problem .GM makes some cars in Mexico, average labor=$3.00 hour, bloomberg reported.

Noticed a little item in IBD paper , apparently, new administration[1-20];
is going to have as enviramental /economy help, a used car buy back. Anyone heard the size?????????.Still looking.

:cool: Cool Forum/thread

i'd replace the battery asap. you're living on borrowed time.

there's little difference between a lead acid battery in a toyota and in any other car. don't think that yours is higher quality because it's in a toyota.
