Hours later Mr Xi told Mr Trump in the Saturday phone call that the US and North Korea should "maintain restraint and avoid any speeches or actions that may escalate tension on the Korean Peninsula", according to Chinese official reports.

Possibly true about the golf course. Con minds are pretty simple and they are highly emotionally influenced. It has always seemed to me that my US liberal friends are far more cool and calculating while prone to flights of fancy also, though that is more down to imaginative exploration that vicarious ideation.

I was recently explaining this to a friend, the famous LBJ campaign "Daisy Girl" ad after Barry Goldwater suggested using nuclear weapons in Vietnam. After this, emotional plays over fact took hold for better or worse in political advertising.

Obviously in the time, the fear was not that North Vietnam has a response to nukes but that the cold war would become hot.
