...and no, ignorance of any particular chain of causation is not the same as random forces impinging on living beings to cause change to the DNA sufficient to produce a new species.
Think about it for a moment.
We know when it is night because we know it is not day, and vice versa.
Exactly at what point in time does it transition from night to day, or from day to night? Since in theory time can be split into as many parts as there are points on a line (a continuum) (we have nano seconds, but every nano second could be split, and that nano nano second could be split, etc.) the exact moment of change from equal parts day and equal parts night to night or day is immeasurable in space and time because we don't have the instrumentation to measure the subtlety of change. It is a continuum.
No, transitions like this are not actually measurable.
The so called evolution of species is also very similar. So we have a fish, and we have an amphibian...but do we know exactly when the fish became the amphibian?
Do we see a fossil record of any complex species changing from one species to another?
Not even close.
It is speculation, conjecture, and may or may not be true...but there is no fact of science that demonstrates exact speciation process due to a so called unplanned evolution that we have a fossil record of.
Life is a continuum, not a rigid speciation process, but that does not preclude the real possibility that this process if by design, and not by random chance.
I know many want to believe that there is no plan to life, no design or designer, and that there is no governing intelligence, and it is there right to believe that is the truth...
...however there is no proof of this...none. It is a belief no more valid that belief in God.
It is more probable to say there is a continuum of life from one species to another, all of which is governed by rules and regulations of nature, and this governing factor preceded the origin of nature and life itself.
The study of the governing factor, while beyond the scope of human science is what the creation theory speculates upon.
