Why can't I get a job? Recent Grad, 3.7 GPA, Good Exp, Year and a half of searching..

Can't beat 'em =join 'em... I transitioned out of Engineering and started studying trading a few years ago... civilizations go through phases, we seem to be about 40 years behind the UK, they go from manufacturing to finance to collapse probably, might as well cash in before the collapse.. look who we elected, it's not like anybody is going to stave off anything that is inevitable...

Exactly, that's why I started a financial business right out of college, doing a certain form of arbitrage (don't really want to discuss details..), and have enjoyed 10X the lifestyle of my engineering grad co-horts.

But it can't possibly be good for society to leave so many highly skilled people unutilized, or underutilized. What's that really saying about us, when no-skilled ass-hats at investment banks, usually the drunken frat boys in college, make millions, while the hard-working and intelligent scientists and engineers make nothing and have to eat Krap Dinner?

Not hiding anything. The tech industry never revived itself after the crash, and the only people hired have been foreigners. My whole graduating class is the same way. And the few who did manage to get jobs have been exposed to constant layoffs, downsizings, and have had absolutely no bargaining power with their employer for a living wage. Its nothing short of a disaster.

And I went to a top-20 engineering school. Not some state college. Heck, even ivy league graduates in engineering for most of the past decade are having serious problems in the job market.

Only a dying, collapsing country and economy would leave their best and brightest talent unemployed, while enriching people who add absolutely nothing of value to the economy (ie: bankers).

Very true and sad at the same time. I fall into the same boat along with many of my friends who are up to their ass in loans. One an engineer fresh out of college 1.5 yrs into employment had to take a 25% pay-cut and forced vacation time. I guess that's what a group of people with some integrity and strong moral standards gets you in America a slap in the face.

Hey you and me both. First thing I'm doing out of college now is picking up an MBA. Hell I wasn't just going to roll over and take it, I worked far too hard for that. If that's where the market is that's where I'll have to be too. It's really too bad that you have to sell your soul to get anywhere in this country.

Edit: Hah and about that drunken frat boy comment. I know its lame but I was just thinking about this the other day too. About all the sacrifices and hard work it took to make it through engineering school. While some guy with no produceable skills what-so-ever lands a nice healthy job out of college.

sorry, my mother has 25 years experience, a masters degree, and much credit towards a phd, is a teacher, and does not make near 80k, and lives in a high income county... you have been misled

suggest you check the numbers in major cities in the US.
furthermore adjust salaries for hours on the job.
benefits are equal to workers who make 2X to 3x in salary in the private sector.

academic credentials are not a predictor of effective teaching

what does the US get for its money? compare it to europe which is not the best in the world either.

My friend is an elementary teacher in NYC. He has a master degree and 11 year experiences rather. He is making well over $80,000 now. Thanks to Mike Bloomberg. He just gets another 8% salary increase this year.

one more reason that the dollar is headed south.

Government sector not only gets bigger, it's also getting PAY RAISES... all the while, the private sector is still getting smaller... more lay offs, pay cuts.

It doesn't work when EVERYONE is a government employee... that's where we're headed. Government gets its money from the private sector you know.

fuck my heart goes out to you guys in the US, its tough with idiots always in power.

Im passing on jobs here, just had to give up a good cadetship for a prop trading job and im sill undergrad for a few more months

I think that show would be a great idea too because some (like you) need a reality check:

...research suggests that young adults today are more self-centered than previous generations. For a multiuniversity study released this year, 16,475 college students took the standardized narcissistic personality inventory, responding to such statements as "I think I am a special person." Students' scores have risen steadily since the test was first offered in 1982. The average college student in 2006 was 30% more narcissistic than the average student in 1982.

If you adjust tuition costs for inflation, they've outpaced it but it's not as bad as you make it out to be... BTW adjusted costs were less for our parents than they were for us but we didn't constantly whine about it. But housing is WAY more affordable for you now than it was during the recession of the early 80s when unemployment was also near 10% and housing affordability was at a 40 year low:

Like I said, a great idea would be to start a tv show where all people actually start from the same level. Then we’ll actually see who are really the successful ones. How in the world can you compare people who could pay for college by working in the Summer to those who’s in state colleges can cost more than 20k a year nowadays? How many times have I asked around here for 10 people under 30 who actually own their own home and put 10% down on it? I’m still waiting.

You've probably been told that because your sense of entitlement is out of control as documented by your statement here which is very telling:

if people don’t tip me, they are not paying for my services. That is stealing from me.

You're wrong about "cheap housing" and while there's some truth to the rest of your "bitch list," you're totally ignoring advantages and opportunities YOU have today that baby boomers didn't.
Quote from Sandybestdog:

I don’t disdain baby boomers, I just think it’s quite ironic that they go around telling kids these days how lazy they are meanwhile they had cheap college, cheap housing, cheap medical care, less job competition, a booming stock market, all while managinng to rack up an 11 trillion dollar debt that they are passing onto us kids. Not to mention the 50 trillion dollar tidal wave heading our way. Just sayin’

I hate to burst your bubble but I've stood on my own two feet longer than you've existed. But I can see how you'd want to pretend that others can't support themselves given how you couldn't hack it in the United States so you expatriated to "safe, tolerant, polite Canada with its generous social benefits for virtually anyone who lands on our shores"
