Why are living standards in the western world still far ahead of emerging countries?

say again? i wasnt talking about the origins of life to have that as a debate. your reference to free thinking and westernism is small and insignificant really compared to the reality of what religion and money has done in our past and for our future.

what were you trying to say really? i was making a point about what humans have been taught the last few thousand years, wether its practical or efficient and how it impacts on our world.

remember if you are speaking from a western, christian, eastern, moslem, or some point of view that likely is apart of some conditioning that i am refering to.

dear madknock,

I would say that your idea of the Origin's of life is contrary to mine...

Life scientifically come from space... Every element was made in the Stars... DNA travels very well in space...

Human are outside the life cycle since the "beginning"... take the 10 best hunters of the world at any point in history... they will be able to defeat any other beings, air, sea and ground... and even one a man vs a lion there is a opportunity to bet...

That's where I hate to see myself as a CO2 producer for plants... As if the Planet used us to bring CO2 to an acceptable level for plants and then drops us... to only allow us to restart every like 10'000 years...

I think that the living stardard of the western world will always be higher than those systems that don't have freedom of speech... Thoughts are the only thing that can adapt faster than the change around us ! Losing this tool... is like losing fire for the first men...

If an individual is denied the right to express his thought, I hope that this individual will not be stupid enough to pursue the quest for any other rights ( physical freedom, possession and co... ).

i get it, the western standard... whatever keeps you warm, i am guessing you dont foresee change within the years you have left on this earth.

What many people who have lived most of their lives exclusively in the West don't understand is that this discussion is primarily a question of education. Education is a luxury.

education considered a luxury is a sad thing. lack of ability to administer to ones own needs and lack of critical thinking has allowed for manipulation of humanity in very questionable directions. people are still easily distracted from the main issues only because they are not educated properly. values are questionable, archaic and all things inefficient and unsuitable for the future, this is why not enough people on this planet will ask the correct questions that will address issues. the same thinking also breeds those that would be cannibals in a sense , those that would prey upon the uneducated.

I had my identity stolen by a lawyer, who eventually sued me. The court allowed him to prevail even though he did not serve me and offered no admissible evidence. The judges sign off on these cases 100 times a day in my city.

If the average is $1000, that is $100,000 a day. And the economic damagee to those 100 people has been estimated at $1 million each over their lifetime.

Quote from jem:

I am serious about the rule of law thing.

Compare what it was like as a citizen in the U.S. or England to do business vs. what it was like in China or Saudi Arabia or Mexico.

What happened if you got ripped off by a government official or big company.

What were you chances of getting redress in a court.

I realize that as a lawyer I am exposed to potentially biased studies about the importance of the rule of law.

But, when you strip out all the differences you have a choice about why the west dominated the last few hundred years.

You have a choice.

Rule of Law
Christian values
Christian work ethic
or all of the above.

Most P.C. people wind up choosing rule of law.

Again, surplus determines a nation's living standard. And many developed nations today have a history of mercantilism. It was the first world that preyed on the third world - hence the headstart and "surplus."

Now, just watch municipalities, states, and the federal government. They are all overindebted.

Misthos, your analysis, insight and the presentation of your ideas in this thread are impressive, brilliant.

I believe you are right about the inverse relationship between wealth and morality (and it's close cousin : the enforcement of the law). Similarly, there is an inverse relationship between population and morality, which boils down to the surplus of a nation, as you have already said.

I think most people are born with good critical thinking skills, but over the years they are discouraged from using it. Look at any 3 year old the way they ask questions when you try to teach them something simple like how toast is made.

Kid: How do you make toast?

Parent: you put 2 peices of bread in the toaster and it heats up and cooks the bread.

Kid: Why does the toaster get hot?

Parent: Because there are little wires in the toaster that get hot from the electricity when you start the toaster

Kid: Where does the electricity come from?

Parent: It comes from the outlet in the wall.

Kid: How does the electricity get in the wall?

Parent; Shut up and stop being so stupid.

This is the point where kids learn to only ask a few questions and not get so deep into critical thinking because they get called stupid. They get conditioned at a very early age to not question authority and just accept that things are the way they are.
