It is amusing that you are quoting a twisted article from a website that misrepresents government claims about vaccines.

Dr. Mercola, the owner of the website, is a complete fraud. He has been ordered by the FDA multiple times to stop making false claims (http://www.quackwatch.com/11Ind/mercola.html). He has been sued countless times. And is featured in articles like - 9 Reasons to Completely Ignore Joseph Mercola and Joe Mercola: 15 years of promoting quackery and 4 of the Biggest Quacks Plaguing America with False Claims About Science.

The only think I quoted from the article was what the Institute of Medicine said, no?

Did the IOM say that they could not state either way whether vaccines caused serious health problems? Or did they not?

Are you saying that direct quotes from the IOM should not be believed if they appear at mercola's site?

What is quoted on Mercola's site is not what the IOM said. It is taking one line from a several hundred page report and presenting in the context that vaccines cause serious health issues... when actually the rest of the report from the IOM states "Overall, the committee concludes that few health problems are caused by or clearly associated with vaccines." over & over again throughout the document. Pure cherry-picking.

The sudden outbreak of measles across the United States raises questions about how the disease arrived in the country after it was eradicated here in 2000.
A quick review of the U.S. State Department visa requirements for immigrant visas reveals that applicants must be vaccinated for measles prior to their approval. Measles vaccination is not required for tourist visas, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, nor is it required for any other disease.

That leaves three possibilities. One is that a tourist present legally in the U.S. brought measles to the country while visiting. This is the most plausible explanation, given that the outbreak began at Disneyland.

Another possibility is that an illegal immigrant brought measles to the country.

And the third, probably most remote, possibility is that a legal immigrant who was vaccinated still managed to contract the disease abroad, since the vaccination is not 100% effective in all cases.

There was a sudden arrival of illegal immigrant children over the summer. However, many of those children were from countries and regions that have high rates of immunization.

The highest rates of under-vaccination in the U.S. are to be found in low-income communities where illegal immigrants may live–but also in high-income communities where many residents have graduate degrees, and some are attracted to alternative methods of healing and non-Western medicine.

Reports from the border last year did indicate some problems with diseases, including illnesses likely to be spread rapidly in cramped holding facilities. Border patrol officerstold Breitbart News at the time that they do not screen for diseases among those detained.

From the border, many detainees were scattered to processing centers throughout the country, and many entered local schools this fall. The spread of measles from Disneyland across the country is far more recent, however.

finally, I am hearing a lot of people blaming the recent outbreaks of diseases on those (Americans) who don't vaccinate their children.

this really seems to misplace the blame... the real issues is all the kids coming in with the diseases.

the info is hard to track down but when I did track down the outbreaks in San Diego the outbreaks hit hardest in the areas and schools with large illegal immigrant populations.

we really need to seal the borders for public health reasons.
if the country wishes to bring in more people that is a political choice.. but lets make sure the immigrants are screened for diseases.

Let's say we had a fully vaccinated population showing solid herd immunity characteristics to a disease. If someone from overseas showed up at Disney Land or the local school then it is unlikely that it will spread across the population if the vaccination rate is near 100%. However if the population is under-vaccinated due to anti-vaxxers then it is far more likely an preventable outbreak of disease will occur across the population.

Yes, the anti-vaxxers share the blame. While the illegal immigrants also deserve part of the blame also.

Look my kids had vaccinations. Because they had vaccinations I really could not stop my wife from going to disneyland for my daughters 5th birthday. They also recently went to a museum. Now they have a strange cough.

In the past I never would have been concerned. Now my wife is bringing them to the doctor to use our over priced healthcare in which we will still probably pay about 65 dollars for the visit and I doubt we will get any kind of meaningful diagnosis.

with my older boys... I never even thought about whether they might have contracted something serious.

Now I have to worry about it because of the open borders and illegal immigrants invited in by Obama and his policies.

This anti vaxxers stuff is a bogeyman... It is a distortion of reality to hide the chaos and danger Obama has exposed us to.

Ok, if you have no problem with the IOM's statements that they don't know one way or the other if the vaccines are causing serious health problems and then go on to reassure the public that they are safe, then that's your prerogative. I wouldn't want to take your choice to make that decision away from you the way that tyrants in gov't want to take my disbelief of contradictory statements away from me.
