when you tell people you are a home trader...

"I'm an equities risk reward manager. With the advent of broadband and residential networking, I'm able to engage in this activity from any location that is equipped to inteface with the Big Board and OTC."

If that still isn't enough, then I ask them "Do you think the Dow Theory was prophecized in Mackays 18th century work? Is a bearish engulfing or doji the true omen of a pattern reversal?"

Their inquisitiveness usually ends righ there.

Quote from anthony_trader:

can someone explain the need for making up these stupid job titles? why can't you just say that you are a trader?
the real issue is, do you care about what people think of you, especially if they have a misconception or are stereotyping?

if you can trade and know you can, do you care if someone thinks you're probably the 80+% who can't do it?

some people know they can trade, so they don't care what others think. some people may be bothered by the misconception, so they use these explanations.

i don't know what's right...

i lean towards who cares what people think, but it is hard sometimes.

very intelligent post Gekko. if there's anyone who knows about things getting hard sometimes thats me. especially with all the women ive had over the years.

I went to visit my sister in the south. Two of her friends asked me about my job. I said: none. They both looked at me like I was just stealing their money.

I sell fear and buy greed. I make money. Some sell greed and buy fear. They make money. Funny job!

Next time I'll say: I sell life insurance. Do you need life insurance? Looks like you need life insurance.

I tell people that I trade Spot FX and Derivaties on M,W,F, and that usually clams them up. I say it with confidence, and rarely, if ever, am I asked a second question. I tell them that I work in the Post Office on Tu and Thursdays.

I tell them I'm a lawyer and I'm in politics. After the dirty looks. I say, "only kidding, I'm really a day trader."

Quote from mercurial:

Be proud that you trade.

Be proud than you own the choices you make.

Be proud that if you succeed it it's your doing and that if you don't that you had the courage to know that it was in your hands.

Here is a quote that might inspire you to be proud of who you are and to stop trying to appease those that don't get it with easier explanations.

The Trader
"The symbol of all relationships among such men, the moral symbol of respect for human beings, is the trader. We, who live by values, not by loot, are traders, both in manner and spirit. A trader is a man who earns what he gets and does not give or take the undeserved. A trader does not ask to be paid for his failure, he does not ask to be loved for his flaws. A trader does not squander his body as fodder, or his soul as alms. Just as he does not give his work except in trade for material values, so he does not give the values of his spirit -- his love, his friendship, his esteem – except in payment and in trade for human virtue, in payment for his own selfish pleasure, which he receives from men he can respect. The mystic parasites who have, throughout the ages, reviled the trader and held him in contempt, while honoring beggars and looters, have known the secret motive of their sneers: a trader is an entity they dread - a man of justice."
--Ayn Rand

That's a hoot.
