If that still isn't enough, then I ask them "Do you think the Dow Theory was prophecized in Mackays 18th century work? Is a bearish engulfing or doji the true omen of a pattern reversal?"

Their inquisitiveness usually ends righ there.

the real issue is, do you care about what people think of you, especially if they have a misconception or are stereotyping?

if you can trade and know you can, do you care if someone thinks you're probably the 80+% who can't do it?

some people know they can trade, so they don't care what others think. some people may be bothered by the misconception, so they use these explanations.

i don't know what's right...

i lean towards who cares what people think, but it is hard sometimes.

I tell people that I trade Spot FX and Derivaties on M,W,F, and that usually clams them up. I say it with confidence, and rarely, if ever, am I asked a second question. I tell them that I work in the Post Office on Tu and Thursdays.
 
I tell them I'm a lawyer and I'm in politics. After the dirty looks. I say, "only kidding, I'm really a day trader."
