i would agree to this statement. it is a rather worrisome problem that no one seems to care or even think about.

This drives me crazy. I have been telling people this for years and they not only did not care or do anything about it the absolutely trashed me. You can't tell people or warn people it is as if they want to live a delusion.

You want to talk about delusions? Here's one for you...

In 16th century Britain, if you made it to the age of 21, your life expectancy was a very modern looking (wait for it) 71 years.

71 years!

Think about the social policy ramifications of this. It basically says all the money we spend on adult health care achieves little more than what used to be achieved with leeches, blood-letting and potions...plus a non-sedentary life style with nothing but "organic" (I'm using the term loosely) meats and vegetables.

An alternate way to look at it is that our modern society is so poisoned that we're spending all this money on health care to keep us alive so we can keep working at producing more poison.

It is as if the medicines are used to compensate for our poor lifestyles. If people were healthier they would not need them. Technology has just led to the luxury of debauchery.

I believe it though and the point made is relevant.

Yes, indeed.

I have a relative who recently had a pacemaker implanted. An obese, extremely unhealthy relative who is almost certainly going to die soon, and unpleasantly.

With finite resources available, we really should be asking ourselves whether emergency care for this one person is really worth giving up comprehensive care for 20 people.

It's the new M-I-C.

Planet Misery, for sure.. but we Boomers will get hosed, too. Sure, some of us early ones will get something. But most Boomers will get FAR less in benefits than they paid-in-for, while the two generations before got FAAARRRR more than they paid-in-for. There was a story just this week about Boomers getting $100,000 LESS in SS retirement benefits than they paid in. (So, where did the rest of the money go? Government STOLE IT, of course.)

The only generation to make out on the Grand Social Experiment is the one BEFORE the Boomers.

I know younger folks like to "blame the Boomers"... it's not our fault... blame Congress for their many crimes and unconscionable greed.

too bad that the people who voted in the cleptokratic politicians were the baby boomers

Quote from nutmeg:

Morgan, In New York state, state pensions are funded by an act of legislation againt all taxpayers. Hence, althought the workers may or may not contribute, the pension are due based on txing authorty. The well won't run dry unless the law is changed.

Private pensions which go bust are funded by the PBGA . this organisation is another BAB (broke ass bitch). Why? Because they are required to be invested in the stock market and just like it's counter part (private Pension) they rise and fall together on unrealistic assumptions of return.

An act in New York State means nothing. When push comes to shove all bets are off. All you have to do is declare bankruptcy and turn it over to the Fed to figure out. That is why I left New York is it just a bunch of smoke and mirrors with Peter robbing Paul as fast as they can to cover up the fact there is little direct money. Most wealthy people live outside NY. Politicans in New York keep on recoining the debt in more subtle terms. New York is broke they are losing people at an alarming rate. This is due to the welfare state they created in the 80's. New York lost two congress seats in the last census. For state workers there are worries that forced layoffs and other measures will be taken to make sure the selct few get pensions. The 2012 election will determin if the US want to go broke fast or slow.

Welcome to Planet Misery,
