So we should pay for everything for everybody? Funeral homes are not a necessary expense. They are mostly a religious ceremony. Whatever happened to separation of church and state? Literally everybody is going to die. If your family wants to have a lavish funeral they can pay for it themselves. In my opinion, they're a complete waste of money. Not one cent of tax dollars should go towards reimbursing them. As for student debt, if they wanted to defer payments for a year I would be fine with it. Canceling debt is a bailout for those who didn't take their job prospects post-education seriously when they majored in art history. What about everybody who went to school, got a good job, and paid their bills?

For the sake of accuracy, the bill provides that cancelled student debt be non-taxable.

This is definitely a step toward cancelling some student debt.

I don’t understand why middle class people feel the need to attack other middle class people on this issue. When Exxon was the biggest company in the world do you know what they did, they lobbied for more tax credits and got them. There are Fortune 500 companies use all of our public goods, established trade relations and imports but pay $0 in taxes yet certain people need to go after these young people with student debt. Try taking a shot at the big guys before picking on the little guys.

I'm not making any assumptions. Funerals are mostly religious. If people aren't aware of their job prospects they shouldn't be spending tens of thousands of dollars at a school. It's called personal responsibility. Something I don't think is too much to ask for from kids who are legally able to vote. I know people who worked throughout college, paid their own way, and came out with zero student debt at good state schools. The problem with people like AOC was she was using her BU (a good, but unnecessarily expensive private school) degree to bartend.

Also if you are poor and your Father dies from Covid.....who pays to have the body prepared for a funeral and buried somewhere? Should poor people just have their body thrown in the river like shit?

My outrage comes from this has little to do with COVID relief and is more of a bailout for poor choices. Relieving everybody's student debt makes no sense. Paying for a funeral makes even less sense. These situations are completely different from bailing out the airline industry when 95% of flights are halted. Medical expenses? Okay. Vaccinations? Definitely fund that. Funerals? Hell no. Student debt? No way. Those were expenses that were going to occur regardless of a pandemic and funeral expenses are completely unnecessary to begin with in my opinion.

Because the airline industry is the only one that got forgiveable bailouts and stock buy backs inflating business bailout need in drawdown were excellent choices

Why was it snuck into the FEMA portion of the relief bill? Just so they could wrap it in the "disaster-related" funeral expense wrapper, to make it seem palatable?

I'm not sure how I feel about it, but when my mom died from cancer I didn't ask for money from the government to cover her death expenses because they (the gub) didn't find a cure for cancer fast enough to prevent her early death.

That bill was a year ago. I'm talking about the bill now. I was not cheerleading them either. As you may recall, I hate Trump. I think the GOP is an embarrassment. However, I'm not going to sit back and cheer on the Democratic Party either. I'm too independent for that shit. I will say that they're different situations. One was clearly in trouble directly, because of COVID. I also supported local restaurants getting relief, not just corporate America. I do not support spending money bailing people out for their poor choices that would have occurred without COVID.

Biden won, because Trump is incompetent and a complete piece of shit. They won GA, because his base stayed home as he floated conspiracies and lies. As for who to bailout, it's mixed for both regular Joes and corporate America. There's people and corporations who aren't effected or are doing better than ever (people who work at home, lots of tech companies), but people and corporations who are clearly effected (travel industry, restaurants, etc). Some of the money that went to the airlines was designed to keep employees on the payroll. I'm not saying the taxpayers need to chip in and give Zoom money. I think we have to use common sense when we are targeting. I want to see the relief go towards public health and where it really hit. I'm finding most people in my social circle feel the same way as I do about this stuff. Eventually the debt has to matter and people want their tax dollars spent wisely.

I think if people can't afford funerals then they should be taken care of in the cheapest way possible. Pandemic or not, all of those people were going to die eventually. Everybody does. It's nobody's right to have a lavish funeral. Charities/churches can step up if they wish. I'd rather that money go towards people alive who need it rather than to mourning the dead.
