This has got to be the stupid statement of the day.

There is no human disease on the face of the earth that has been eliminated through "natural herd immunity". All diseases have been eliminated through vaccination to provide society with herd immunity.

For many diseases including COVID being infected does not automatically provide long term immunity -- only a vaccination assures long term antibody immunity.

Actually, there is data on NEJM.org that suggests Covid mutates more quickly than influenza. Regardless, Covid mutates quicker than we can develop new vaccines for it, limiting the effectiveness of vaccines as a decisive preventative measure.

The scientists disagree with your assertion. They state that COVID-19 will not mutate at a rate which will require a new vaccine every season like the flu. They expect that an effective vaccine will work with all the various mutations of COVID-19 in the foreseeable future.
 
Hey I thought N. Dakota and S. Dakota reached "herd immunity".

I guess the verdict is out on a definitive definition.... but would that not imply a there will be a relatively small number of new infections? I mean for real, it should imply zero right?

That sounds pretty low, but the entire state has 869K people.

Our political system does not attract the most capable leaders, especially in the last twenty years. No other US leader would have done better at containing Covid than Trump. Sure Trump mishandled the Covid crisis. So has most other world leaders. Remember, the US has the added challenge of a particularly mobile population.

My concern is Joe may try a half hearted shutdown that will wreck the global economy and financial system and still not eliminate Covid, vaccine or not, as Covid mutates. By half hearted, I mean not completely shutting down our borders until Covid cases world-wide have been reduced to zero for an appropriate period of time. Remember, Covid was able to spread from a single market in Wuhan, China to a global pandemic in a matter of months.

Until people consistently apply best practices concerning PPE, etc., Covid outbreaks will continue for the foreseeable future, just like influenza.
