Vietnamese billionaire sentenced to death for fraud

Remember the British dude who was too old for jail? Well she is only 67, so young enough to die:

Behind the stately yellow portico of the colonial-era courthouse in Ho Chi Minh City, a 67-year-old Vietnamese property developer was sentenced to death on Thursday for looting one of the country's largest banks over a period of 11 years.

It's a rare verdict - she is one of very few women in Vietnam to be sentenced to death for a white collar crime.

The decision is a reflection of the dizzying scale of the fraud. Truong My Lan was convicted of taking out $44bn (£35bn) in loans from the Saigon Commercial Bank. The verdict requires her to return $27bn, a sum prosecutors said may never be recovered. Some believe the death penalty is the court's way of trying to encourage her to return some of the missing billions.

.... over a period of three years from February 2019, she ordered her driver to withdraw 108 trillion Vietnamese dong, more than $4bn (£2.3bn) in cash from the bank, and store it in her basement.

That much cash, even if all of it was in Vietnam's largest denomination banknotes, would weigh two tones.

Hello Pekelo,

I am stealing money from the ES and NQ futures market everyday, and it is perfectly legal.

Everyday is good day for me.

Thank you my Lord for the CME futures market! Thank you!!

Angelo Mozilo should have been publicly hanged
There should have been a lot of hanging circa 2008. Unfortunately, AFAIK, no top brass on Wall Street got punished for the subprime fiasco. Sure the government slapped them with civil panalties, which amounts to peanuts compared to the collective damage they've done.

Oh, yeah, they did go after bad actors like Madoff who had nothing to do with the subprime mess. So, in that regard, the government is like most posters on this site who suffer from ADHD. They can't seem to stay on topic and always end up barking at the wrong tree. :)

Turns out law in a communist run country is still law. If anyone here has visited vietnam..they will tell you..its a pretty amazing place.
No Homeless
Very little crime
Most young people go to a science based college with real math
very good and very cheap healthcare
cheap housing costs
cheap food costs
well policed
borders well protected
happy society..friendly people

If the USA would have executed Richard Fuld, Jimmy Cayne, Lloyd Blankfein..our world would be a better place
When will that scumbag Corzine ever go to jail. I guess when you're buddies with the Clinton & Goldman Mafia you get to walk away while destroying your customers. It's a wonder Drexel, Milken & Andersen ever got prosecuted.

Oops.Defrauded the wrong person.

Corzine started a trend (a brokerage principal stealing money from other unrelated accounts). That dirtbag FTX guy, he did the same.
VERY bad trend.

There isn't one state in the union that offers no bail release on felony murder charges.

Many states don't even make it an option.

They just don't charge you with felony murder. Look at the guy who tried to stab the last Republican candidate for governor in NYS. They had the criminal back on the street before lunch.

lol

Well, it is tough to get a DA to charge one with felony murder in the absence of the crime of murder.

For goodness sake lol

Lee Zeldin (the victim) released a statement in response to the sentencing, saying:

“It is my understanding that over the past 17 months David Jakubonis has been making important personal strides thanks to the great resources made available through the Monroe County VA and other local veterans organizations. I hope he can make significant progress towards getting his life back on track and continues to make the most of the mental health and support resources in the area.”

Jakubonis was a mentally ill Iragi War vet. You'd rather he get life without parole than mental health treatment?
